As Kenya inches closer to a historic milestone in education,
\nschools across the country are finalising preparations to receive the pioneer
\nGrade 10 learners under the competency-based education system\u00a0from Monday.<\/p>\n

A spot check by the Citizen team established that some schools were putting the final touches in readiness for the learners.<\/p>\n

In Nyamira County, the countdown to reporting day has
\ntriggered a last-minute rush in some learning institutions.<\/p>\n

Contractors race against time, putting finishing touches to
\nclassrooms as the school awaits its first Grade 10 learners.<\/p>\n

Kebirigo Boys School is expecting close to 700 Grade
\n10 learners across the three pathways. Despite the tight timelines, the school
\nmanagement says it is optimistic that the remaining work will be completed by
\nnext week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the making of the
\nnew system, it is more practical-oriented, so there are things we had to put in
\nplace \u2014 facelifts in the dorms, more science labs and computer labs,\u201d said Kebirigo
\nBoys Deputy Principal James Ogari.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are privileged to have a number of our teachers as TOTs
\nand they spare time to take others through. With a staff of around 175
\nteachers, almost all of them have been exposed to CBE.\u201d<\/p>\n

In neighbouring Kisii County, at Kereri Girls High School
\nand Kisii High School, classrooms are all set for the new learners.<\/p>\n

At Cardinal Otunga High School, a school widely recognised
\nas a sporting hub, all is set for the arts and sports pathway.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to partner closely with our national
\npolytechnics, where we have adequate personnel, so that they can assist our
\nlearners who want to venture into technical areas,\u201d said Cardinal Otunga Principal
\nEzekiel Okeyo.<\/p>\n

Along the Kisii\u2013Transmara border, the management of Riokindo
\nBoys High School was in a last-minute meeting to plan for the first CBE intake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are hoping that the ministry will distribute books on
\ntime,\u201d Riokindo Boys Chief Principal Gerald Orina noted.<\/p>\n

Kwale Girls in the coastal region and Sosit Girls in Kericho
\nCounty have also expressed their readiness three days to reporting day.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Citizen TV on the phone, Education Cabinet Secretary
\nMigos Ogamba said the government has already trained teachers for the new
\nlearning areas, including marine, fisheries and aviation.<\/p>\n

\u201cPreparations have been going on. For instance, we know that
\nwe are going to graduate these learners to universities in the next three
\nyears, so we have started working with universities in advance. And that is
\nwhat was happening as we were dealing with JSS; the senior school teachers and
