The second half of the trip was\u00a0a train safari in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini, and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Departing from Victoria Falls, the first stop on our African train safari was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hwange_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hwange National Park.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_7826.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_7826.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_7826.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Hwange National Park is the largest natural reserve in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zimbabwe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. It is around 14,600 sq km in area. It lies in the northwest of the country, just off the main road between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bulawayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bulawayo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victoria_Falls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Victoria Falls<\/a>. (Wikipedia)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_7825.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_7825.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_7825.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Hwange means &#8220;water&#8221; or &#8220;hunting&#8221; in the Ndebele language, reflecting the region&#8217;s historical significance as a watering hole for wildlife and a popular area for hunting expeditions. The name is derived from the Ndebele word &#8220;Hwange,&#8221; which is believed to have originated from the sound of water flowing or the presence of abundant game.\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdomlib.org\/cities\/hwange-23070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">www.wisdomlib.org\/&#8230;<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>November is the transition from the dry to the rainy season. Things were starting to green up and birds were enjoying the grasses. Locals told us that the rains had started about a week earlier.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_7817.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_7817.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_7817.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nRed-billed Spurfowl, Secretarybird, Grey Heron,\u00a0Marabou Stork, and\u00a0Spur-winged Goose<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5613.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5613.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5613.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nThe watering holes were starting to fill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5599.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5599.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5599.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nGrey Crowned Cranes<\/p>\n<p>Video of Grey Crowned Cranes and Blacksmith Lapwings, with an Egyptian Goose making noise. A clue: they were all gathered at the back of the boat with binoculars and cameras, pointing excitedly. This morning, a few of us gathered\u00a0in the same safari vehicle, including the only person with a birding book. Although common, it\u2019s secretive and was very difficult to spot. This photo is zoomed and cropped.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5729.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5729.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5729.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>More Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill<\/p>\n<p>A medium-sized, mostly black-and-white hornbill with a diagnostic yellow bill that gives it the nickname of \u201cflying banana\u201d. Pairs and small groups occupy semi-desert, savanna, and broadleaved woodland; associates closely with humans in camps. Hops on the ground foraging for invertebrates, and flies into trees when disturbed. (eBird)<\/p>\n<p>Southern Yellow billed Hornbill video. The nests belong to the\u00a0White browed Sparrow Weaver so I included a couple of photos of the Weaver in the video. (0:57 seconds).\u00a0This video was taken at our lunch spot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_4862.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_4862.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_4862.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nLunchtime for yours truly (looking at camera)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5747.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5747.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5747.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nI think this is a Carpenter Ant making off with a crumb of chocolate cookie<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5751.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5751.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5751.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nKudu horns on right, not sure what horns are on the left<\/p>\n<p>After lunch\u00a0we were given the option of returning to the train to relax or continuing on safari. Of course, we continued.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5765.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5765.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5765.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nBack on the road<\/p>\n<p>All day we saw large insects flying and hovering. We nicknamed them \u201cdrone beetles\u201d. They were Dung Beetles.\u00a0This Dung Beetle was working hard at the side of a road. Video 3:12 minutes, no sound.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cape Starling\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5786.jpeg\" title=\"Cape Starling\"\/><br \/>\nCape Starlings were ubiquitous. This one had several caterpillars in its beak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_7821.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_7821.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_7821.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nAlso very common: Guinea Fowl<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5726.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5726.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5726.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nLilac-breasted Rollers. The bird on the left kept trying to entice the bird on the right with a delicious morsel. She wasn\u2019t having it.<\/p>\n<p>The bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis) is a species of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fox<\/a> found on the African <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Savanna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">savanna<\/a>. It is the only extant species of the genus Otocyon, and is the sister species to all other members of the tribe <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vulpini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vulpini<\/a>. Fossil records indicate this canid first appeared during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chibanian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">middle Pleistocene<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_7820.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_7820.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_7820.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nBat-eared Fox. There were a pair of them. The larger image is zoomed and cropped from the inset image.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_5714.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5714.jpeg\" title=\"IMG_5714.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nAcacia trees. This park had the most birds of any of the parks we visited. We saw many more species than I was able to photograph.
