They used a diagnosis report and manipulated it into a sickness claim. The claim was successful,” Gabriel said.

“When the money was paid by Sanlam, accused two (Mateus) instructed Claudia to distribute it to various people,” he said.

According to Gabriel, N$200 000 was paid to Nakanduungile, N$400 000 to Mateus’ cousin, Israel Shikongo, while N$190 000 remained with Claudia.

Gabriel testified that another amount was paid to a fourth person whose name he could not recall.

He later stated that N$80 000 from the N$400 000 paid to Shikongo was transferred to Nakanduungile’s daughter, Maria’s bank account.

Nakanduungile allegedly withdrew the money and handed it over to another person.

The money was allegedly meant for a complainant in another criminal case linked to Mateus, which Gabriel said is the reason Mateus is in custody.

In an age of information overload, Sunrise is The Namibian’s morning briefing, delivered at 6h00 from Monday to Friday.
