WINDHOEK, Dec 19 (Reuters) – Namibia’s president said on Friday that Ebson Uanguta would take over as central bank governor from January 1, replacing Johannes !Gawaxab whose departure<\/a> was announced last month.<\/p>\n

Uanguta has served as one of the Bank of Namibia’s deputy governors since January 2012.<\/p>\n

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s office said in a statement that Uanguta’s appointment as governor was for five years.<\/p>\n

!Gawaxab was appointed in June 2020 and steered the central bank through the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Under his tenure resource-rich Namibia became an exploration hotspot for global energy companies. It is aiming for its first crude oil output by 2030, which could transform its small economy.<\/p>\n
