Advocates say action is needed to confront today&#8217;s <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/europes-racial-disparities-cannot-be-untied-historical-wrongs-report-says-2024-09-25\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legacies<\/a>, including racism.Calls for reparations have <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/slavery-tribunal-africa-caribbean-unite-reparations-2024-04-04\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gained momentum<\/a> but there is also a growing <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/portugal-rejects-far-right-bid-charge-president-with-treason-over-slavery-2024-05-15\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backlash.<\/a> Many European leaders have <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/where-europe-us-stand-slavery-reparations-2024-10-25\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opposed<\/a> even discussing the matter, with opponents arguing today&#8217;s states and institutions should not be held responsible for historical wrongs.<\/p>\n<p>While Ghana has been at the forefront of reparations advocacy in Africa, the delegation emphasised the need for &#8220;strategic coherence and unity&#8221; among political leaders across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>They urged Mahama to encourage other leaders to &#8220;choose courage over comfort&#8221; by standing with civil society and affected communities in Africa and the diaspora in demanding reparations.<\/p>\n<p>The delegation also met on Wednesday with Ghana&#8217;s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Mahama&#8217;s envoy on reparations Ekwow Spio-Garbrah.<\/p>\n<p>At a European Union\u2013AU summit in Luanda, Angola&#8217;s capital, last month, leaders from both regions acknowledged the &#8220;untold suffering&#8221;
