{"id":14577,"date":"2026-01-10T05:29:34","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T05:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/14577\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T05:29:34","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T05:29:34","slug":"south-africa-comes-out-in-solidarity-with-the-uk-hunger-strikers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/14577\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa comes out in solidarity with the UK hunger strikers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Organisations in South Africa have taken to the streets, calling for government action to urge the UK to stop the imminent death of political prisoners Heba Muraisi and Kamran Ahmed.<\/p>\n<p>Muraisi and Ahmed are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/amp\/news\/2026\/1\/8\/palestine-action-hunger-strikers-near-death-intent-on-continuing-protests\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">on the brink of death<\/a>\u201d after two months of a hunger strike against their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/uk\/analysis\/2026\/01\/06\/hunger-strike-prisoner-t\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">cruel treatment<\/a> by the state. They and others face allegations of non-violent action against Israeli arms company Elbit amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/explainer\/2025\/08\/01\/genocide-accusations-israel\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza<\/a>. But because the UK government later deemed this direct action to be \u2018terrorism\u2019:<\/p>\n<p>All eight individuals will have spent more than a year in prison before their trials take place, well beyond the UK\u2019s usual six-month pre-trial detention limit.<\/p>\n<p>A broad coalition of groups and individuals in South Africa have shown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/646780217661973\/posts\/1174925348180788\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">solidarity with the hunger strikers<\/a> this week by calling on their government to put pressure on the UK to stop their deaths:<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83e\uddf5 January 8, 2026 | Africa News Round Up | From Drop Site News Africa correspondent Godfrey Olukya<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\uddff\ud83c\udde6 SOUTH AFRICA<br \/>Thousands of South Africans, led by several civil society organizations, held nationwide protests on Tuesday in solidarity with pro-Palestine hunger strikers being\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IulmPqSSdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/IulmPqSSdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Drop Site (@DropSiteNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DropSiteNews\/status\/2009506241278513205?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">January 9, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Relating to this protest, the civil society organisations said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvoiceforlabour.org.uk\/article\/uk-government-meet-the-demands-of-the-hunger-strikers\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">the hunger strikers<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>are political prisoners who are being singled out, labelled terrorists and punished (instead of celebrated) for allegedly destroying killing machines.<\/p>\n<p>They added:<\/p>\n<p>A total of 33 activists remain in UK pre-trial detention, unjustly denied bail for as much as a year for allegations that have yet to be heard in court. They are subjected to shocking mistreatment in prison, placed in solitary confinement, abused by prison guards, denied medical care, and have had their communications censored.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Unjust detention\u2019, say people in South Africa<\/p>\n<p>A 29 December <a href=\"https:\/\/prisonersforpalestine.org\/south-african-groups-call-on-government-to-help-save-the-lives-of-hunger-strikers\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">open letter<\/a>, meanwhile, urged South Africa\u2019s president and international minister to:<\/p>\n<p>hold the UK government to account<\/p>\n<p>It also noted that the alleged actions of the hunger strikers relate to:<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s supply of weapons to Israel for its genocide against Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>And as it stressed, the political prisoners:<\/p>\n<p>are awaiting trial, and have not been convicted of any crime.<\/p>\n<p>It further noted the connection to past hunger strikes in South Africa itself, saying:<\/p>\n<p>Under apartheid, some detained unjustly by the regime used hunger strikes as the only form of resistance available to them, calling for justice for themselves and for all who were oppressed. As a nation, we must therefore stand in solidarity with these\u2026 young people, support their reasonable demands, and urge the British government to end its injustices against them, actions that could ultimately cost them their lives.<\/p>\n<p>A national \u2013 and international \u2013 scandal<\/p>\n<p>Back in the UK, Amnesty International has called the situation \u201cdrastic and urgent\u201d:<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We urge David Lammy to immediately authorise a senior official to meet with the legal representatives of Heba Muraisi and Kamran Ahmed \u2013 both on prolonged hunger strike and at extreme risk of death. <\/p>\n<p>Their representatives have repeatedly requested this meeting and it is now\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HcW58C074X\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/HcW58C074X<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Amnesty UK (@AmnestyUK) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmnestyUK\/status\/2009292997284773928?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">January 8, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your Party figures have condemned the government\u2019s cruel behaviour. MP Jeremy Corbyn has called the ordeal a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jeremycorbyn\/status\/1999497042704400549\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">national scandal<\/a>\u201c. And MP Zarah Sultana has called the government\u2019s treatment of the captives \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zarahsultana\/status\/2008587675800867074\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">spineless and cowardly<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Green figures have also criticised the Labour government. Party leader Zack Polanski, for example, has called its excessively harsh detention of the activists an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZackPolanski\/status\/1999142501995724839\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">egregious violation<\/a>\u201c. MP Carla Denyer, meanwhile, has called for <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/carla_denyer\/status\/2009284015421804863\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">action to protect the hunger strikers<\/a>, insisting that:<\/p>\n<p>anti-terrorism powers are being misused to avoid treating them fairly.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/amp\/news\/2026\/1\/8\/palestine-action-hunger-strikers-near-death-intent-on-continuing-protests\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Al Jazeera<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of doctors have called on the UK government to increase the frequency of medical observations of the hunger strikers.<\/p>\n<p>And emergency physician Dr James Smith has said the strikers have received:<\/p>\n<p>the most undignified treatment that I have ever come across in an NHS environment in my career as a doctor<\/p>\n<p>Despite rapidly deteriorating health and hospitalisation, however, Muraisi and Ahmed have pledged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/amp\/news\/2026\/1\/8\/palestine-action-hunger-strikers-near-death-intent-on-continuing-protests\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">continue their hunger strike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government, meanwhile, is further seeking to ramp up its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/uk\/analysis\/2026\/01\/08\/backlash-forces-starmer\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">deeply regressive clampdown on protest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over in South Africa, people have a strong, recent memory of what it\u2019s like to resist the cruelty of a repressive regime, and their solidarity today is incredibly welcome.
