African tribesmen lined the ridge to my left, shoulder to shoulder, as far as my eyes could see. I was at peace. Eleven frames. Eleven seconds. Then I came. Again.”

The Magic Mike actor explained that the vision inspired him to take a trip to Africa, so he bought a ticket to “the massive continent the wet dream was calling me to.”

“I bought a one-way ticket to Bamako, the capital of Mali, then hitchhiked nine hours to the port city of Mopti, where I met a guide named Issa who had a boat,” McConaughey continued.

In order to keep his real identity hidden, McConaughey recalled telling people that he met that his name was David and that he was a writer and boxer.

After word got around at a small African village that a stranger, who claimed to be a champion boxer, was in their midst, McConaughey was approached by villagers who wanted to challenge him to a fight.

Matthew McConaughey. He is the real champion wrestler of the village.’ My heart started racing. Then I heard my own voice whisper, Take the challenge or you will forever regret not knowing. Leave your scent. I stood up, pointed to his chest, then mine, and walked toward the pit. The villagers went batsh*t.”

McConaughey went on to describe the violent battle between the men that occurred during round one of the fight.

“Head-to-head, we spun in a few circles measuring the other’s might before Michel lifted me up and into him, my chest to his face, then body-slammed me to the ground, knocking the wind out of me. One for him,” McConaughey wrote. “The crowd howled as he tried to pin me. I countered, whipped my hips, swung my leg over his head, and slammed him back. One for me. For minutes we circled, flipped, and smashed each other into the dirt. Neither of us could pin the other. The chief broke it up. I was bleeding, hyperventilating, knees and ankles torn.”

Related: Why Woody Harrelson Wanted to Punch ‘Motherf***er’ Matthew McConaughey

Woody Harrelson was nearly pushed to the brink while navigating longtime friend Matthew McConaughey’s acting process on the set of True Detective. “He’s method,” Harrelson, 64, said on the Tuesday, January 6, episode of his and Ted Danson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast. “He’s Russ Cohle.
