China&#8217;s top diplomat postponed what would have been a historic visit to \u200bSomalia, part of a tour of Africa aimed at bolstering strategic \u200ctrade, the East African nation&#8217;s foreign affairs ministry said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Wang Yi&#8217;s planned visit would \u200chave been the first by a Chinese foreign minister since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It had been expected to provide Mogadishu with a diplomatic boost after Israel became the first country to formally recognise the breakaway Republic of Somaliland, a northern region \u2060that declared its independence in \u200c1991.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Somalia&#8217;s relations with the U.S. are also at a low point after Washington said this week it would pause further \u200dassistance that benefits the government over a dispute about the demolition of a World Food Programme warehouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Somali foreign affairs ministry officials told Reuters that the reason for the \u200bpostponement and a future schedule for Wang&#8217;s visit would be provided later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">China&#8217;s \u200cforeign affairs ministry did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Wang began his annual New Year&#8217;s tour of Africa on Wednesday, focusing on strategic trade access across East and Southern Africa as Beijing seeks to secure critical shipping routes and resource supply lines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He arrived in Dar es Salaam on Friday for \u2060a two-day working visit, Tanzania&#8217;s foreign ministry \u200bsaid in a post on its X \u200baccount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It added that the visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen economic ties between the two nations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Wang met with Ethiopian \u200dPrime Minister Abiy Ahmed \u2060on Thursday and called for greater cooperation with Africa&#8217;s fastest-growing economy, including in infrastructure, green industry, and the digital economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He is also expected \u2060to travel to Lesotho during the trip, which is due to conclude on January 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">(Additional \u200creporting by Sfundo Parakozov in Johannesburg and Joe Cash in Beijing;Editing \u200cby Philippa Fletcher and Joe Bavier)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"By Abdi Sheikh and Vincent Mumo Nzilani MOGADISHU, Jan 9 (Reuters) &#8211;
