{"id":1610,"date":"2026-01-04T01:15:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T01:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/1610\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T01:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T01:15:09","slug":"death-toll-in-mombasa-road-accident-rises-to-eight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/1610\/","title":{"rendered":"Death toll in Mombasa Road accident rises to eight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/7ddfd290-7d20-4214-9f7c-4baed5a05dec.jpg\" class=\"ui-draggable ui-draggable-handle\" style=\"max-width: 100%; width: 100%;\"\/>Ongoing rescue operations in the accident which occurred along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway near Konza Technopolis city, leading to fatalities in Machakos county on January 2, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll from a road traffic accident along the Nairobi\u2013Mombasa highway has risen to eight.<\/p>\n<p>Machakos County Chief Officer for Medical Services Rashid Kalla said two people who had been admitted to Machakos Level 5 Hospital on Friday night succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA road traffic accident occurred along Mombasa Road near Konza City at approximately 10:05 pm, involving a bus and a 19-seater Nissan vehicle. Following the incident, eleven injured patients were received at Machakos Level 5 Hospital,\u201d Kalla told reporters on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Two male patients later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities at the hospital mortuary to eight, including six people\u2014three males and three females\u2014who were pronounced dead at the scene.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said five of the nine patients currently listed as injured had been treated and discharged, while the remaining patients continued to receive medical care pending further assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation at Machakos Level 5 Hospital remains calm and under control. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this incident and wish those injured a speedy recovery,\u201d Kalla said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Mukaa Sub-county Police Commander Hussein Abduba had confirmed six deaths at the scene and said several others were injured in the accident, which occurred on Friday night in the Katumani area near Konza Technopolis City, along the Machakos\u2013Makueni county border.<\/p>\n<p>According to police, the crash involved a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) bus and a matatu travelling in opposite directions along the busy highway.<\/p>\n<p>Abduba said preliminary information indicated that the matatu, which was travelling from Nairobi, was involved in a collision with the bus during an overtaking manoeuvre. <\/p>\n<p>He noted that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident were ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix people died at the scene, while others sustained injuries and were taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment,\u201d Abduba said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p>The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the hospital mortuary, where they are awaiting identification and post-mortem examinations.<\/p>\n<p>The police commander urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly on major highways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrivers need to be careful on the road.
