The crane then lifted the massive mola mola out of the dry dock and gently lowered it back into the sea beyond the dock’s caisson door.

Throughout the operation, the team closely monitored the sunfish’s breathing and ensured water continued to flow over its gills.

After re-entering the sea, rescuers swam alongside the sunfish, removing restraints and guiding it toward deeper, safer waters.

Viljoen praised dock master Johan Coetzee and his team for alerting the Aquarium in time and helping make the complex rescue possible.

“A massive thank you to Teemane Cranes for generously donating their crane and operator time, making this rescue possible, and to Dock Master Johan Coetzee for alerting us to the sunfish’s presence,” she added.

Seeking safe harbour

The Two Oceans Aquarium explained that during storms or rough sea conditions, sunfish often move into calmer waters, where they can become disoriented and end up trapped in harbour basins.

These incidents occur almost every summer at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront and Simon’s Town harbours.

A dramatic marine rescue kicked off the year for the Two Oceans Aquarium team after their largest-ever sunfish…

[52
305,10717,10718,10719,10720,131,10721
0":"post-16696","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-south-africa","8":"tag-featured","9":"tag-fish","10":"tag-harbour","11":"tag-marine-conservation","12":"tag-record","13":"tag-south-africa","14":"tag-two-oceans-aquarium
["GET
