Toronto \u2013 Ethiopian Human Rights Commission Commissioner, Berhanu Adelo,\u00a0 this week visited Klinto prison facility in the outskirts of the capital Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n

The facility is heavily crowded because the facility is holding more than its capacity, the commission said in a statement it released on Friday.\u00a0 The Commission did not paint a vivid picture of how many inmates are living cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Poor prison conditions have been a major problem in the country based on past human rights reports from reputable international organizations like the Human Rights Watch. Ethiopian Human Rights Commission itself did call for prison condition improvement in the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Klinto Prison authorities have made the decision to transfer those inmates who have received prison terms to the kaliti prison facility, according to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission. It is yet to be implemented.\u00a0 Berhanu Adelo is cited as requesting the prison authorities for swift implementation of the transfer to reduce overcrowded prison cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The commission has said that it has got explanations from prison authorities about suspects staying in the facility and the kind of services they are getting.<\/p>\n

Also the commission said that underage suspects are not staying in the facility in separation from others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Partial disruption of water supply and toilets without a door are among the challenges that inmates are facing in the facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Food is another issue. Klinto is reportedly allocating only 35 birr per day per inmate, that is about Canadian 30 cents per day. Also, inmates are not allowed to have more than 200 birr which they say is not enough to buy essentials they need.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The response on the daily meal budget issue is that Human rights got from the prison authorities is that \u201cthey are closely working with relevant government bodies,\u201d as reported by Ethiopian Human Rights Commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges highlighted above, Commissioner Berhanu Adelo says \u201cthere have been positive improvements in handling suspects.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cConducive\u201d conditions for religious freedom, the option to purchase basic consumption from the center and adequate and clean water supply for drinking and personal hygiene are some of the \u201cimprovements\u201d the commission mentioned in its report.\u00a0<\/p>\n
