{"id":16986,"date":"2026-01-11T12:05:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T12:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/16986\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T12:05:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T12:05:14","slug":"two-workers-killed-as-building-under-construction-collapses-in-karen-nairobi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/16986\/","title":{"rendered":"Two workers killed as building under construction collapses in Karen, Nairobi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/29cfaa00-680a-4db3-8bfe-a8a04f3d7437.jpg\" class=\"ui-draggable ui-draggable-handle\" style=\"max-width: 100%; width: 100%;\"\/>The site where a building under construction collapsed and killed two people on January 10 in Karen, Nairobi<\/p>\n<p>Two workers&#13;<br \/>\nwere killed when a building under construction collapsed on Saturday in Karen,&#13;<br \/>\nNairobi.<\/p>\n<p>Seven other workers&#13;<br \/>\nwere rescued and rushed to hospital with multiple injuries.<\/p>\n<p>However, two people sustained severe crush injuries and were pronounced dead, police and the responders said.<\/p>\n<p>Their bodies were transferred to the Nairobi Funeral Home.<\/p>\n<p>The building&#13;<br \/>\nhad reached on the first floor and the masons were laying a slab when it&#13;<br \/>\ncollapsed on January 10, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency&#13;<br \/>\nservice providers rushed to the scene after the news of the latest incident&#13;<br \/>\nspread and cleared the rubble late in the night.<\/p>\n<p>The Nairobi&#13;<br \/>\nCity County Government claimed the collapse of a building in Karen was caused&#13;<br \/>\nby structural failure linked to poor workmanship and inadequate formwork.<\/p>\n<p>County Executive Committee Member for Built&#13;<br \/>\nEnvironment and Urban Planning, Patrick Mbogo said initial findings revealed&#13;<br \/>\nthe use of sub-standard materials, with timber gum tree supports allegedly used&#13;<br \/>\ninstead of the required steel props to support a double-volume slab.<\/p>\n<p>According to NCCG, architectural plans for the&#13;<br \/>\nproject were approved on November 14, 2024, while structural plans received&#13;<br \/>\napproval on November 27, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The developer and the structural engineer of the&#13;<br \/>\nproject were identified and would be questioned.<\/p>\n<p>The incident&#13;<br \/>\noccurred along Ngong View Lane in Karen Ward, Lang\u2019ata Subcounty.
