You saw what happened when the Rwenzururu Kingdom\u2019s Buhikira Royal Palace was attacked, and our people were killed in broad daylight. We have had enough of 40 years of National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, and you must change to a government that puts citizens above leaders,\u201d Kiiza insisted.<\/p>\n<p>The Electoral Commission has put in place measures to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process, but Kiiza urged youth to focus on peaceful campaigning and to avoid being used by politicians to engage in violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, however, call on security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that all citizens can exercise their right to vote without fear or intimidation. Gen. (rtd) Gregory\u00a0Mugisha\u00a0Muntu promised to establish an industrial hub in Kasese to tap into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) market and boost Uganda&#8217;s economic growth, create jobs, and increase trade with neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n<p>Muntu emphasised the importance of strengthening trade ties with DRC, highlighting the potential for Uganda to become a key player in regional trade, leveraging its strategic location and resources.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/02838717-2154-4cd6-9fdc-da47b2311ba2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/8b28062c-03f6-4c5a-828e-17a007aeb1fb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen trusted with power, we plan to include investing in infrastructure, such as roads and border facilities, to facilitate the movement of goods and people and focus on agro-processing, manufacturing and tourism development,\u201d he pledged.<\/p>\n<p>Julius Baluku, a resident, said, \u201cWe are excited about Muntu&#8217;s pledge, as it will open up new markets for our products and create jobs for our people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kasese railway<br \/>Muntu hinted at revamping the Kilembe copper mines and Kasese railway in a bid to boost Uganda&#8217;s economy as a way of reviving the mining sector and promoting industrialisation.<\/p>\n<p>The Kilembe copper mines, located in Kasese district, have been dormant for decades due to various challenges, including low copper prices, outdated equipment, and insecurity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4173af14-5463-48e1-98cb-4080fd1f613b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/06908d38-6911-4f09-a14a-446b44c4a263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>However, with the global demand for copper on the rise, particularly for electric vehicles and renewable energy, Muntu sees an opportunity to revive the mines.<\/p>\n<p>Muntu&#8217;s plan to revamp the Kasese railway is aimed at facilitating the transportation of copper and other minerals from the region to the port of Mombasa.
