We go back to a time when Mansa Musa, the 14th Century king of the fabulously wealthy, gold-based Malian Empire, was the richest ruler on earth, and a world historical figure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"68\">Accompanying \u201cFollowing the Gold Road\u201d is the music playlist <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/playlist\/4JhlCDSAv6Oa5IzI61OiKK\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mali Gold<\/a> curated by Banning Eyre for public radio\u2019s Peabody Award-winning Afropop Worldwide (found on afropop.org). This is an expansive playlist of iconic hits from the golden age of Malian music, from the 1980s onwards, featuring beloved artists such as Salif Keita, Ali Farka Tour\u00e9, Oumou Sangar\u00e9, Toumani Diabat\u00e9, Habib Koit\u00e9, Kandia Kouyat\u00e9, the Super Rail Band and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"80\">\u201cFollowing the Gold Road\u201d is a three-part lecture series presented on January 14, 21 \u00a028 (and later on YouTube.)\u00a0\u00a0It features leading U.S.-based scholars of African history and anthropology, targeting K-12 educators as well as all interested others. It explores the medieval West African empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhai (6th\u201316th centuries). The program reframes global medieval history by centering Africa\u2019s essential role in the world economy through its prized resource\u2014gold\u2014and by spotlighting its contributions to art, architecture, learning and governance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Keep up with the latest headlines on <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VaIdDi8Bqbr263erhw1K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WhatsApp<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/allafrica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"53\">This 2026 edition of AAI\u2019s State of Education Conference explores the centrality of ancient West African empires to the global economy.
