{"id":19509,"date":"2026-01-12T20:38:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T20:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/19509\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T20:38:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T20:38:07","slug":"samia-suluhu-lashes-out-at-journalists-amid-growing-criticism-of-state-violence-article","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/19509\/","title":{"rendered":"Samia Suluhu lashes out at journalists amid growing criticism of state violence | Article"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    &#13;<br \/>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphMain_usrArticle_imgCountryStory\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/tanzania.gif\" alt=\"Tanzania\"\/>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>    &#13;<br \/>\n        12 Jan 2026&#13;<\/p>\n<p>PREVIEW<\/p>\n<p>    &#13;<br \/>\n        Ahead of investigations into the killing of demonstrators the CCM government is beefing up its control of the media<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s crackdown on dissent is continuing after the state\u2019s accreditation agency for journalists said that it would rigorously enforce the Media Services Act to ensure that only people with a license can publish content.<\/p>\n<p>The Journalism Accreditation Board said it had identified individuals practising journalism without meeting the legal requirements since last October\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p>Three journalists were among the hundreds of Tanzanians killed during protests following the elections, awarded to President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-confidential.com\/profile\/id\/4600\/samia-suluhu-hassan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samia Suluhu Hassan<\/a> with 98% of the vote after the main opposition candidates were banned from standing.<\/p>\n<p>Acting JAB Director Patrick Kipangula says that the move is about professionalising journalism and that practising journalism in Tanzania without accreditation is illegal. He added that almost 4,000 journalists have registered with the board and are legally permitted to work.<\/p>\n<p>However, civil society groups contend that the 2024 law gives the regulatory body the sole power to decide what is required to obtain a license.
