President William Ruto has affirmed that the government has
\nput in place concrete and deliberate plans to help young people access
\nemployment, saying job creation cannot be left to chance.<\/p>\n

Speaking at Kabiruini Showground in Nyeri County during the
\nissuance of NYOTA grants to youth, Ruto said the government must be intentional
\nand strategic in creating jobs rather than waiting for opportunities to \u201cpop
\nup\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first time, I can confirm that the government of
\nKenya has a clear plan on how young people are going to access jobs,\u201d the
\nPresident said.<\/p>\n

Ruto noted that the government has invested heavily in
\neducation and must now ensure that the returns on that investment are realised
\nthrough meaningful employment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is why we have designed interventions to make sure the
\nmoney we have spent on education \u2014 the Sh700 billion used to educate your children
\n\u2014 delivers value. People leaving school must be placed in areas where they can
\ncontribute to the progress of our nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The President outlined several interventions aimed at
\nboosting employment, including large-scale public construction projects.<\/p>\n

He said many countries have relied on infrastructure
\ndevelopment to create jobs, adding that Kenya\u2019s affordable housing programme is
\nnot just about putting up houses but also about employment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe housing project is about jobs. Today, more than 500,000
\nKenyans are working under the housing programme,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n

He added that the government has rolled out a labour export
\nprogramme to open up job opportunities for Kenyans abroad, while also investing
\nin digital infrastructure to grow employment in the technology sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want one million young people working in the digital
\nspace. Currently, we have about 300,000, and we are expanding this number,\u201d he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

Ruto said the NYOTA programme is another key intervention
\nunder the government\u2019s job creation agenda, with a target of reaching 800,000
\nyoung people nationwide.<\/p>\n

Implemented with support from the World Bank, the NYOTA
\ngrant provides eligible youth with seed capital of up to Sh50,000, alongside
\ntraining in entrepreneurship, financial literacy and life skills. The programme
\ntargets vulnerable and low-income youth to support enterprise development and
\nself-employment.<\/p>\n

The President urged young people to take advantage of the
\nprogramme, saying seeking opportunities to improve livelihoods reflects the
\nKenyan spirit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen young women with young children also seeking to
\nbenefit from this programme. This is not about politics. We all want to have
\nthriving businesses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki dismissed
\ncriticism from leaders who have questioned the adequacy of the NYOTA grant,
\nsaying the initiative is a vital starting point for youth empowerment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you think the money is small, we will give what we are
\nable to give now. Go and look for more money and add to what the government is
