Principal Secretary for Cooperatives Susan Mang\u2019eni has cautioned young women against financially exploiting the men under the Nyota Fund programme, particularly through frequent requests for money and transport fare.<\/p>\n

Speaking during an address to
\nbeneficiaries, the PS urged the young women to focus on hard work and personal
\neffort instead of depending on male peers for financial support. <\/p>\n


\n
\nShe noted that the habit of asking
\nyoung men for fare is contributing to unnecessary financial strain among many
\nof them.<\/p>\n


\n
\n\u201cLadies, please don\u2019t financially
\ndrain our boys, kazi ni kujituma. Msiitishe fare,\u201d she said, stressing that
\neconomic empowerment initiatives are meant to encourage independence.<\/p>\n


\n
\nThe PS also highlighted how changing
\nsocial interactions among youth have led to casual name-calling and
\nexpectations that often result in financial pressure. <\/p>\n


\n
\nShe advised both male and female
\nbeneficiaries to maintain respectful boundaries.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cKuna majina sasa mtaanza kuitwa.
\nMaster, wengine mnaitwa bossy, wengine wakudumu, mnaitwa kiongoss. Alafu
\nwatawaita mababes. Kama wewe jina yako ni Ibrahim, mtu hajakuitaga babe, leo
\numwambie hapana akuite tu Ibrahim,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n(They will start calling you some
\npet names like Master, Bossy, Wakudumu, Kiongoss. Others will also be called
\nbabes. If your name is Ibrahim and someone who doesn\u2019t call you babe does that
\ntoday, tell her no. Your name is Ibrahim).<\/p>\n

\nPS Mang\u2019eni added that some of the
\nyoung men, in an attempt to meet these expectations, have been pushed into
\nunnecessary spending that affects their ability to focus on income-generating
\nactivities. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cAlafu muambiwe muanze kutuma fair.
\nNyinyi madem msifilisishe vijana wetu. Kazi ni kujituma kama hiyo ndio nia yako,
\njitume. Ni kujituma. Usiitishe fare kwa vijana wetu ili wapate fare wafanye
\nbiashara,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n(Then some of you will be asked to
\nsend fare. Ladies, do not drive our young men into financial lack. The goal is
\nto make something out for yourself. So work hard. Do not ask for fare from
\nour young men so that they can use the money for business.)<\/p>\n


\n
\nMang\u2019eni emphasised that the Nyota programme is designed to empower youth to become self-reliant and to build
\nsustainable livelihoods. <\/p>\n


\n
\nShe urged beneficiaries to use the
\nopportunity for their growth and avoid habits that undermine financial
\ndiscipline.<\/p>\n


\n
\nThe PS called on all participants to
\nembrace responsibility, mutual respect, and personal effort as part of their
\njourney in the empowerment programme.<\/p>\n


\n
\nNyota is designed to provide seed capital to young
\nentrepreneurs, enabling them to start or expand businesses while supporting job
\ncreation at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n


\n
\nThe programme has already been rolled out in Kakamega,
\nEldoret, and Nakuru counties and the Central region to benefit Nyeri, Murang\u2019a,
\nNyandarua, and Kirinyaga counties.<\/p>\n


\n
\nOther regions where the fund has since been rolled out
\nare Samburu, Marsabit, Laikipia, and Isiolo counties.<\/p>\n


\n
