{"id":20828,"date":"2026-01-13T13:39:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T13:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/20828\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T13:39:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T13:39:08","slug":"ugandas-military-deployed-in-national-capital-ahead-of-upcoming-presidential-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/20828\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda&#8217;s military deployed in national capital ahead of upcoming presidential election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KAMPALA \u2013 President Yoweri Museveni and his political opponents in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/uganda\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uganda<\/a> held their final rallies on Tuesday ahead of an election that authorities will oversee with soldiers in the streets, deployments that have alarmed opposition figures who see signs of the authoritarianism they want to oust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/yoweri-museveni\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Museveni<\/a>, Africa\u2019s third-longest-ruling president, seeks <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uganda-president-seventh-term-elections-44423482941ac90d93919a7aa2f1e273\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a seventh term<\/a> to extend his rule into a fifth decade after Thursday\u2019s election. His main opponent is the singer-turned-politician best known as <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/bobi-wine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bobi Wine<\/a>, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Six other candidates are running for president in the East African nation of roughly 45 million people, which electoral authorities said has 21.6 million registered voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Museveni \u201cwill likely retain power in forthcoming polls,&#8221; the International Crisis Group said recently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Ugandan authorities began deploying troops on Saturday in parts of the capital Kampala, with armored trucks spreading into different parts of the city and soldiers patrolling the streets. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Military spokesman Col. Chris Magezi said the deployment was meant to deter violence, rejecting concerns that the mobilization was anti-democratic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cNo cause for alarm,\u201d Magezi said. \u201cHowever, we do not take threats of violence during the election period by some political actors and their supporters lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Incumbent faces a youthful challenger<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Museveni and Wine are reprising their rivalry from <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bobi-wine-yoweri-museveni-east-africa-kampala-elections-1183009d3fec4232f36b8cf9bd9dd589\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the previous election in 2021<\/a>, when Wine rattled authorities with a bold quest for leadership that appealed to mostly young people in the urban areas. With voter turnout of 59%, Wine secured 35% of the ballots against Museveni\u2019s 58%, the president&#8217;s smallest vote share since his first electoral campaign three decades ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Wine&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/yoweri-museveni-kampala-elections-bobi-wine-uganda-2ab1bfd57d93c39a73adfddf67f7a366\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prominence as an opposition leader<\/a> has since grown. The 43-year-old appears to have kept much of his base intact in parts of eastern Uganda as well as the metropolitan area around Kampala, where he has held boisterous rallies while <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uganda-election-military-violence-bobi-wine-b3bec5ee8b68125c49ba9e91e9b992ac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wearing a flak jacket and helmet<\/a> to protect himself from gunfire. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Museveni, 81, has a loyal following across northern Uganda and his western home region. His supporters credit him with restoring relative peace and stability in a country that is home to hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing violence elsewhere. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Wine told The Associated Press in a recent interview that he and his supporters have been attacked by security forces who used tear gas and sometimes even bullets, allegations repeated by Amnesty International. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Museveni has spoken disparagingly of Wine, calling him as unpatriotic and an agent of foreign interests. Wine rejects the charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Many in Uganda&#8217;s ruling party, known as the National Resistance Movement, have suggested Museveni would never hand power to Wine if the challenger won the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Museveni campaigned under the banner of \u201cprotecting the gains,\u201d a term some see as misguided because it evokes concerns about largesse from rampant official corruption. Others also perceive a measure of force in the slogan, suggesting power is not negotiable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI was born when Museveni was in power,\u201d said 37-year-old Farouk Mugaya, who operates a passenger motorcycle in Kampala. \u201cThey have had enough time to protect the gains. I want to see change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mugaya said he plans to vote in his hometown of Iganga in eastern Uganda even though he is not optimistic about the outcome. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to say they rigged the vote when I was just there and didn\u2019t vote,\u201d he said. \u201cI want to say they stole the vote when I also voted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Others who spoke to the AP said they want the next government to prioritize job creation, with unemployment a major issue for voters seeking change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cUganda is very hard. Getting money is not easy,\u201d said Denis Oraku, a mason who works at a construction site just outside Kampala.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite relative peace, Oraku said, \u201cwe have no jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">President\u2019s son is part of the equation<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Museveni first took power by force as the leader of the guerrilla army fighting to restore democratic rule after a period of civil war and the cruel dictatorship of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uganda-politics-idi-amin-legacy-contested-92d393e6d2a0d444c224289be2d2d208\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Idi Amin<\/a>. He has been elected six times since 1996, nearly all of those polls marred by allegations of rigging and interference by the security forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Some critics say removing Museveni from power via elections remains difficult, but the aging president&#8217;s authority has become increasingly dependent on the military led by his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Kainerugaba is a four-star general who sparked controversy as the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uganda-president-museveni-son-politics-twitter-8255f03ff4714906803eb5248b60141e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tweets widely seen as offensive<\/a>, including comments about invading neighboring Kenya and an offer of cattle as a dowry to wed the Italian prime minister. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Kainerugaba also said he expects to succeed his father as president, raising concerns over <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uganda-presidents-son-muhoozi-army-election-9005cd934b2f294b027bb4a00c8a7d95\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">family rule<\/a> undermining democracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cTime is not on his side,\u201d analyst Robert Kabushenga said on a popular podcast, speaking of Museveni. \u201cFor the first time he is actually, really an outsider.
