{"id":214575,"date":"2026-05-01T21:04:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/214575\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T21:04:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:04:11","slug":"akpabio-promises-nigerian-workers-a-living-wage-on-may-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/214575\/","title":{"rendered":"Akpabio Promises Nigerian Workers a Living Wage on May Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Friday assured Nigerian workers that the National Assembly is aware of their economic challenges and remains committed to improving their welfare through legislative measures.\n<\/p>\n<p>The former Akwa Ibom State governor gave the assurance in a congratulatory message to mark the 2026 International Workers\u2019 Day, issued in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh.\n<\/p>\n<p>Akpabio acknowledged the difficulties faced by workers and pledged the Senate\u2019s continued intervention through legislation aimed at improving living conditions and workplace standards.\n<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThe 10th National Assembly recognises the challenges workers face, from rising costs of living to workplace demands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assure you that the Senate remains unwavering in its commitment to legislating for a living wage, safer workplaces, pension reforms, and policies that expand job creation and protect the dignity of labour.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act and the implementation of workers\u2019 welfare packages are testaments to this commitment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>His message comes against the backdrop of mounting economic pressures on Nigerian workers, including rising inflation, the high cost of living, and concerns over wage sustainability, which have continued to dominate national discourse.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate President also called on employers across sectors to prioritise workers\u2019 welfare, stressing the link between productivity and improved working conditions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we celebrate you\u2014the teachers who mould our future, the farmers who feed our nation, the doctors and nurses who heal our land, the artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees whose daily toil builds Nigeria.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo organised labour, I commend your constructive engagements and patriotism.
