{"id":21699,"date":"2026-01-13T22:54:29","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/21699\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T22:54:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:54:29","slug":"un-agency-praises-kenyas-efforts-to-integrate-refugees-in-kakuma-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/21699\/","title":{"rendered":"UN agency praises Kenya&#8217;s efforts to integrate refugees in Kakuma camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/africa\/UN-agency-praises-Kenya-s-efforts-to-integrate-refugees-in-Kakuma-camp-2017039?gallery=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/86085095.295.jpg\" alt=\"New United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, Kakuma, Kenya\" title=\"New United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, Kakuma, Kenya\" width=\"295\" height=\"167\" \/> <\/a>New United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, Kakuma, Kenya<\/p>\n<p id=\"article-123\">The new United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees visited Kakuma refugee camp in north-west Kenya on Monday where he praised the country for its integration efforts.<\/p>\n<p>It opened in 1992 to welcome people escaping problems in countries including South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n<p>After his visit, Barham Salih said the camp offered an important example of \u201cinclusion and generosity\u201d on the part of the host nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a model that stands out as a pillar for protection and also inclusion and for creating sustainable solutions that can see refugees beyond dependency on humanitarian assistance for long periods of time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although it remains under the United Nations\u2019 management, in April 2025 Kakuma was redesignated a municipality, one that local government officials later will run.<\/p>\n<p>Salih also lauded Kenya&#8217;s efforts to integrate refugees into local services after visiting the settlement&#8217;s health facilities and schools.<\/p>\n<p>He said refugees deserve inclusion and the ability to manage their situations so that they can become productive members of society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my view, helping refugees is to help them out of that dependency. It\u2019s not to create that dependency.
