{"id":218874,"date":"2026-05-04T20:20:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T20:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/218874\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T20:20:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T20:20:22","slug":"nigeria-says-130-citizens-seek-repatriation-after-latest-anti-immigration-protests-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/218874\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria says 130 citizens seek repatriation after latest anti-immigration protests in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) \u2014 Nigeria will repatriate 130 Nigerians living in South Africa after a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-illegal-immigration-march-protests-cbc323b775625516597792db82d87ae0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new wave of anti-immigration protests<\/a> in that country, according to the foreign minister, who summoned South Africa\u2019s top representative there on Monday to express concern.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s foreign minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, described the repatriation effort as voluntary and said more people were expected to sign up.<\/p>\n<p>Odumegwu-Ojukwu was meeting with South Africa\u2019s acting high commissioner to convey the Nigerian government\u2019s \u201cprofound concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No Nigerians were killed in last week\u2019s protests against migrants in South Africa, who have been targeted over the years and accused of taking jobs in a country with high unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>South African officials have condemned the violence and promised to crack down on \u201cxenophobic acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separately, South Africa\u2019s foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, said he had a phone conversation with his Nigerian counterpart to reflect on the \u201cchallenges posed by irregular migration\u201d and work to address the causes and find solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Two Nigerians were killed in separate incidents with South African security operatives last month.
