href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/17\/africa\/namibia-desert-elephants-scn-c2e-spc-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Namibia<\/a> has deployed hundreds of soldiers as part of efforts to contain wildfires that have burned through around a third of the territory of one of the largest game reserves in Africa.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4vg7ae0000356moknodd3r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fires started on September 22 in the southwestern part of the Etosha National Park (ENP), according to a statement from the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism, published Saturday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4y24hu000f356mwwxnzs9k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At that point, according to the ministry, an estimated 775,163 hectares (1.9 million acres) of the park had been burned, equivalent to 34% of its total area, with another 171,098 hectares (423,000 acres) of land outside the park also affected.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4xuxd8000c356m2razka8j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe ecological damage inside ENP is extensive,\u201d the ministry said in the statement, adding that the fires started \u201cdue to suspected charcoal production activities on bordering commercial farms.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4y481q000i356m8zmy6eav@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a separate statement published Sunday on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NamibianPresidency\/posts\/pfbid02siZHzHF3UocQEBZYXhyZtVnrsDb6kHiy4JPu7R1SAFR9XVe3s64vv31dQMFBgbuFl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, the office of acting Namibian President Lucia Witbooi said 540 soldiers have been deployed to help fight the fires, along with helicopters.\n    <\/p>\n<p> data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe fire poses a significant threat to the biodiversity, wildlife and livelihood of the communities in the affected areas,\u201d it said, adding that an unknown number of animals have been killed but there have been no reported human casualties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4ydgm1000o356m2oswrm3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cStrong winds and dry vegetation contribute to the fire spreading rapidly,\u201d read the statement, which added that authorities \u201ccontinue to mobilise resources to reinforce ongoing efforts to enable the teams on the ground to extinguish the fire.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4yecl8000x356m5eqrlt4x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Monday morning local time, Namibian Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare Manongo said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ngurare\/status\/1972561834767954370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">post<\/a> on X that fires were still burning both inside and outside the park, but all of them had now been contained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4z0tur0000356ma76gveca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen there is teamwork there is no challenge we cannot overcome,\u201d said Manongo in a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ngurare\/status\/1971999285521817643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">post<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4ye3al000u356m1vgsvglq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Etosha National Park is a major tourist attraction that draws around 200,000 visitors a year, according to Namibia\u2019s tourism ministry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4z2jpz0002356mpc7726mm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is home to 114 species of mammal, including elephants, lions, giraffes and critically endangered black rhinos, as well as 340 bird species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4z6zn20007356mgq5occt8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The park is also home to a salt pan that covers 4,730 square kilometers (1,826 square miles) \u2013 so large that it is visible from space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4y5e63000l356mwpl79w0q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to NASA, fires triggered by lightning strikes used to burn in the park\u2019s savannas and woodlands around once a decade before firefighters started to aggressively extinguish wildfires.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025-09-30t052727z-358980205-rc2q1has56vz-rtrmadp-3-namibia-wildfire.JPG\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then, a mounting body of scientific evidence suggested that occasional burning is key to maintaining a healthy ecosystem in the park, leading park officials to implement a system of preventative burning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4zs8ql000l356mydz8w6oe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This is designed to prevent devastating wildfires like those that occurred in 2011, when dozens of animals died in fires that burned 370,000 hectares (940,000 acres) of the park.\n
