{"id":225751,"date":"2026-05-09T01:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T01:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/225751\/"},"modified":"2026-05-09T01:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T01:11:10","slug":"collection-of-ancient-artifacts-found-in-egyptian-city-of-alexandria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/225751\/","title":{"rendered":"Collection of ancient artifacts found in Egyptian city of Alexandria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A collection of artifacts dating from the Ptolemic to the Byzantine period were discovered during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/archaeology\/article-893851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">excavations<\/a> in the Muharram Bek neighborhood of Alexandria last week, the Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Ministry announced, showing the changing nature of the city\u2019s population throughout history.<\/p>\n<p>Among these finds were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/archaeology\/article-894583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">several statues of Greek and Roman dieties<\/a>, including Bacchus (Roman god of wine and revelry), Asclepius (Greek god of medicine), and a headless statue believed to depict the Roman wisdom goddess Minerva.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Several coins, lamps, pottery vessels, and amphorae fragments were also unearthed, reflecting the flourishing nature of ancient Alexandria\u2019s commerce and connections with the surrounding Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">One of the most impressive discoveries at the site, according to Dr. Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary-General of Egypt\u2019s Supreme Council of Antiquities, was that of a circular public bath from the Late Ptolemaic era, as well as the remains of a Roman villa with mosaic flooring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The site \u201cpresents a comprehensive model of the development of residential and service architecture in ancient Alexandria,\u201d said Mohamed Abdel Badi, Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Remains of Roman villa with mosaic floors found in in the Muharram Bek neighborhood of Alexandria, Egypt, May 8, 2026.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"822\" height=\"829\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/720143.jpeg\"\/>Remains of Roman villa with mosaic floors found in in the Muharram Bek neighborhood of Alexandria, Egypt, May 8, 2026.
