The Ondo State Police Command on Sunday said it had commenced an investigation into the death of a 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Favour Olaniyi.\n<\/p>\n
Olaniyi, a student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics of the Federal Government-owned institution, was reportedly found dead inside a bush near his off-campus residence in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Saturday.\n<\/p>\n
The circumstances surrounding the student\u2019s death were still unclear as of the time of filing this report, although the police said a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance was recovered at the scene, raising suspicion of suicide.\n<\/p>\n
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said detectives had already begun investigating the case.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Ondo State Police Command has commenced investigation into a suspected suicide case involving one Olaniyi Favour \u2018M\u2019, a 23-year-old 100-level student of Federal University of Technology Akure,\u201d the statement read.\n<\/p>\n
Jimoh added that \u201cthe deceased was reportedly found lifeless inside a bush along FUTA North Gate, Akure, on Saturday, 9th May, 2026. Detectives who visited the scene observed no visible marks of violence while a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance was recovered at the scene.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
According to him, the corpse had been deposited at the morgue for preservation and further examination, while investigation was ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.<\/p>\n
Reacting to the development, the university described the student\u2019s death as \u201csad and unfortunate.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
In a statement issued by the institution\u2019s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, the university said its security personnel immediately alerted the police after the incident was reported.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Federal University of Technology Akure is saddened by the unfortunate incident involving one of its students, Favour Olaniyi, a year one student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics who was found dead very close to his off-campus residence on Saturday, May 9, 2026,\u201d the statement read.\n<\/p>\n
It added that police officers, medical officials and university security personnel coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue.\n<\/p>\n
The university also disclosed that the deceased\u2019s parents had been informed and assured that the institution was fully cooperating with investigators.\n<\/p>\n
According to the statement, university officials are also providing counselling support to some of the deceased\u2019s classmates affected by the incident.\n<\/p>\n
