{"id":22845,"date":"2026-01-14T12:29:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T12:29:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/22845\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T12:29:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T12:29:06","slug":"us-will-not-block-extradition-of-ofori-atta-sedina-tamakloe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/22845\/","title":{"rendered":"US will not block extradition of Ofori-Atta, Sedina Tamakloe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"article-123\">The Minister of Foreign Affairs, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/people\/person.php?ID=2383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa<\/a>, has disclosed that the United States government has assured Ghana that it will not stand in the way of efforts to extradite two high profile Ghanaians of interest.<\/p>\n<p>The two individuals are former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori Atta, and former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/politics\/Does-convicted-Sedinam-have-blood-in-her-veins-while-Ofori-Atta-has-palm-kernel-oil-in-his-Davies-asks-2017162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Does convicted Sedinam have blood in her veins while Ofori-Atta has palm kernel oil in his? \u2013 Davies asks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the foreign affairs minister said the assurance was given during a high-level bilateral meeting between Ghanaian and US officials.<\/p>\n<p>Ablakwa indicated that the meeting reviewed the state of Ghana\u2013US relations and law enforcement cooperation, noting that Ghana facilitated the extradition of nine suspected individuals to the United States in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhana and the United States applauded our improved security and law enforcement cooperation leading to the extradition of 9 suspects from Ghana to the USA in 2025, and the ongoing commendable efforts to also send over 2 Ghanaians of high interest from the US to Ghana,\u201d Ablakwa stated.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that the US government had given a clear assurance regarding Ghana\u2019s request for the extradition of Ken Ofori-Atta and Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States Government has assured, that without prejudice to judicial processes, it will not stand in the way of Ghana as regards the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta and Sedina Tamakloe Attionu,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Frank Davies, a member of Ofori Atta\u2019s legal team, has hinted at legal steps initiated in the United States to challenge the custody of Ofori Atta following his detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).<\/p>\n<p>According to Davies, Ofori-Atta is currently in ICE custody and that his legal team, working in collaboration with lawyers in the United States, has already moved to contest the detention in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKen Ofori-Atta has been picked up by ICE. We all know he is in custody.
