Bobi Wine, a singer-turned-politician, finished a distant second.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcy6e5h00043b6n23a18n1v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, disputed the results, claiming they were rigged. The 44-year-old former pop singer, who claims he has been beaten, tasered, and attacked with teargas while campaigning against Museveni, is now rarely seen in public without a flak jacket and helmet.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Who are the main contenders?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcxzk7v00003b6nqmejov3f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Museveni seized the top job in 1986 \u2013 when Wine was just three. He secured the presidency following an armed uprising, and is now seeking a seventh consecutive term in office. Observers and analysts expect he is very likely to achieve it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcydfln000c3b6nxokfoebx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He has built his campaign around the motto \u201cprotecting the gains,\u201d portraying a legacy of peace and stability during his four decades in power, and promised to lift Uganda \u2013 one of the world\u2019s poorest countries \u2013 to a \u201chigh middle-income status\u201d through investment in manufacturing and agriculture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcydfln000d3b6n3aqr21rt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Museveni\u2019s critics claim he has so-far held on to power by sidelining opponents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcydfln000e3b6ns4g12r3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wine has built his identity on uncompromising opposition to what he describes as Museveni\u2019s \u201cdictatorship.\u201d He is promising to build \u201ca new Uganda,\u201d pledging to revive political freedoms, eradicate corruption and create jobs. His campaign has mobilized millions of disenchanted young Ugandans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcydfln000f3b6nrfe1t9nt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is important for us to challenge the authoritarian leader \u2013 again and again \u2013 until we eventually get our freedom,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fedition.cnn.com%2F2026%2F01%2F12%2Fworld%2Fvideo%2Fuganda-elections-bobi-wine-intv-011211aseg2-cnni-world-fast&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cnimi.princewill%40CNNContractor.com%7Cfd37fe21dd2049aa34a508de52ad7837%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C639039102167934220%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=kgH95HrKDJRU5lBaOJZaxvnV1l5jCTfkl836HYctzA0%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wine told CNN<\/a>. \u201cBecause not challenging him means giving up.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcydfln000g3b6n91y7bktu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe know that all (institutions of the state) are up against us \u2013 the military, the police\u2026 But it is clear that the people of Uganda are standing firm behind the positive change that I am leading.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcydfln000h3b6n9le1k20e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the election is seen as primarily a contest between Museveni and Wine, there are six other candidates, including prominent lawyer Nandala Mafabi.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcydfln000i3b6nr3pfm0j7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mafabi, 59, attracted large crowds in parts of Uganda, where he promised to manage the country\u2019s resources prudently and campaigned with the slogan, \u201cFixing the economy; money in our pockets.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcy6uv5000a3b6njs2ukjpq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Museveni\u2019s ruling National Resistance Movement party has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/07\/27\/africa\/uganda-presidential-age-limit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">altered Ugandan laws<\/a> to help him maintain power, including the removal of age and term limits for the presidency. After securing a fifth term in 2016, he told the BBC that \u201cwe don\u2019t believe in (presidential) term limits.\u201d He has faced repeated criticism for suppressing opposition rallies and cracking down on anti-government protests.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcysgrh001x3b6niko4a8b3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Tuesday, just two days before the vote, Ugandan authorities implemented a nationwide internet blackout and restricted mobile services, similar to actions taken during the previous election.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/c-2026-01-08t150558z-1970363091-rc2xwiazxvgr-rtrmadp-3-uganda-politics.jpg\" alt=\"Workers walk past boxes containing electoral materials before their distribution from the Uganda Electoral Commission warehouse, ahead of the country's general election, in Ntinda suburb of Kampala, Uganda, on January 8.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1516\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcylzz3000p3b6n787vi3al@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the lead-up to the 2021 election, violent clashes resulted in dozens of deaths. The European Union Council of Ministers highlighted widespread issues with the electoral process at the time, noting internet blackouts, harassment of opposition leaders, and media suppression, including raids on observer offices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcylzz3000q3b6nug7sh6tf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the run-up to Thursday\u2019s vote, chaotic scenes resurfaced, with CNN witnessing security forces using violence against Wine and his supporters at rallies. Wine has characterized the election as a \u201cwar,\u201d citing the imprisonment of hundreds of his mainly young supporters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcylzz3000r3b6nkh20vhd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Ugandan police deny any intention to target Wine or his supporters. However, last week, authorities imposed restrictions on live broadcasts of riots and \u201cunlawful processions.\u201d Museveni encouraged security forces to use tear gas instead of live ammunition to disperse what he labeled as \u201cthe criminal opposition.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcylzz3000s3b6nvgs7l205@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The UN Human Rights Office raised concerns about \u201cwidespread repression and intimidation against the political opposition, human rights defenders, journalists.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcylzz3000t3b6npz5pby95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Presidential hopeful Mafabi told CNN he had been \u201ctargeted by police\u201d several times. He recounted one such incident in Amudat, a town in northeastern Uganda, where his car came under gunfire. \u201cChallenging Museveni comes with a lot of risks,\u201d Mafabi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcylzz3000u3b6n1z3tq8by@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has contacted police authorities for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyf2l0000n3b6npqlkud4f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            About 21.6 million Ugandans are registered to vote, making up less than half of the country\u2019s population of over 45 million, according to the electoral commission. Notably, nearly half of Uganda\u2019s population is under the age of 18, the voting age.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcynxg200113b6nusro72jt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recent polls indicate that corruption and unemployment remain voters\u2019 top concerns. Uganda is grappling with significant government corruption, with approximately Sh. 10 trillion ($2.7 billion) in public funds misappropriated annually, according to the Inspectorate of Government, the nation\u2019s anti-corruption agency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcynxg200123b6nocvi5l0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Additionally, data released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics in September revealed that nearly half of the country\u2019s youth population, aged 18 to 30, is unemployed, uneducated, or lacking training. This age group makes up over 23% of Uganda\u2019s total population.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcynxg200133b6npz1ey8ic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Analysts believe that many potential voters are yearning for new leadership. \u201cClearly, everybody wants to see a different government,\u201d stated Yusuf Serunkuma, a columnist for the Ugandan Observer newspaper and a researcher at Makerere University in Kampala, the country\u2019s capital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyo48h00153b6nzx7b4w7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the desire for change is widespread, \u201cthe government has a firm hold on any space where change might come from,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcynv3a000z3b6nxtfodhqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s zero chance,\u201d Serunkuma said of Wine\u2019s chances of gaining the presidency. He told CNN that Uganda\u2019s opposition is hampered by ineffective organizational structures.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001c3b6n48tomg91@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe government has put in place measures to make sure that the incumbent is declared winner,\u201d he claimed, alluding to the alleged influence the government has over the electoral commission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001d3b6nrzszuggs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Simon Mulongo, a former lawmaker and ex-African Union envoy, echoed Serunkuma\u2019s prediction about the election outcomes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001e3b6nunnf1xre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBobi Wine has emerged as a powerful symbol of generational aspiration. However, winning national power requires more than symbolism,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt demands deep organizational structures, nationwide coordination, and the capacity to secure and protect votes across rural and urban areas.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001f3b6n843w36hs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wine came to prominence in the early 2000s for his vibrant dancehall music, which often addressed social injustices. His rise to global recognition came in the 2010s when his song \u201cKiwani\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdisney.fandom.com%2Fwiki%2FQueen_of_Katwe_(soundtrack)&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cnimi.princewill%40CNNContractor.com%7Cfd37fe21dd2049aa34a508de52ad7837%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C639039102167984771%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=lpwtFpJMLSNe6QiC5qUDvOKL8hEPFW6sfdIt%2BO0Cy0U%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">featured in the soundtrack of the Disney film Queen of Katwe (2016).<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001g3b6ncud3q6ix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite his popularity, Wine has faced backlash for some of his past lyrics, including homophobic messages advocating for the \u201cbanning and killing of all homosexuals.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001h3b6npvr7qr8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It led to a 10-year ban on his entry into the United Kingdom, which was lifted in 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001i3b6n818czna1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Following a trip to the UK two years ago, Wine publicly renounced his previous beliefs, telling supporters that \u201cpeople grow and transform\u201d.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyqqxd001j3b6nzhuxcfcu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2023, Ugandan lawmakers enacted some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/29\/africa\/uganda-life-for-lgbt-community-intl-cmd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strictest anti-gay laws<\/a> in the world, which include the death penalty for \u201caggravated homosexuality,\u201d and up to 20 years in prison for individuals identifying as LGBTQ+. CNN could not confirm whether Wine was in support of the legislation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyox7a001a3b6nl1m004j8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Serunkuma expressed uncertainty about the potential for unrest during and after the election, describing the situation as \u201cunpredictable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcys43x001q3b6n7jktv0hm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s so much anger and anxiety. You can\u2019t be 100% sure where the spark would come from,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a nervous moment for everybody; it\u2019s a nervous election.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcys43x001r3b6n732uorul@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, Mulongo does not foresee chaos on polling day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcys43x001s3b6n8904p1dt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHistorically, voting itself has been relatively orderly, with most tensions arising either during the campaign period or after results are announced,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe days following the announcement of results will be as important as election day itself.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyrbzt001o3b6n9ebdmiru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under Museveni\u2019s leadership, Uganda has emerged as an important ally of Western countries, providing troops for regional military operations.
