{"id":23208,"date":"2026-01-14T16:06:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T16:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/23208\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T16:06:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T16:06:19","slug":"kenya-railways-explains-demolition-of-wamatangis-businesses-near-nyayo-stadium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/23208\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya Railways explains demolition of Wamatangi\u2019s businesses near Nyayo Stadium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.digital\/author\/brian-kimani-91354\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ui-avatars.com\/api\/?name=B+K&amp;color=7F9CF5&amp;background=EBF4FF\" alt=\"Brian Kimani\"\/><\/a> By<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.digital\/author\/brian-kimani-91354\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n        Brian Kimani<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      Published on:  January 14, 2026 05:54 (EAT)<br \/>\n      <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Kenya Railways explains demolition of Wamatangi\u2019s businesses near Nyayo Stadium\" alt=\"Kenya Railways explains demolition of Wamatangi\u2019s businesses near Nyayo Stadium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Wamatangi-og_image.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p>Bulldozers demolished several properties, including a restaurant and car wash belonging to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, as well as other businesses.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" data-v-7257c9c5=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/tts-pre-loader.gif\" alt=\"Vocalize Pre-Player Loader\" style=\"all:unset!important;display:inline!important;\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-7257c9c5=\"\" style=\"font-size:13px;margin-left:20px;\">Audio By Vocalize<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Kenya Railways Corporation has defended the demolition of<br \/>\nbusinesses near Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, saying the move is part of a land<br \/>\nrepossession process aimed at easing transport ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of<br \/>\nNations (AFCON) tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On Tuesday night, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.digital\/article\/business-premises-linked-to-kiambu-governor-wamatangi-demolished-n375731?preview=true&amp;user_id=749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bulldozers demolished several properties<\/a>,<br \/>\nincluding a restaurant and car wash belonging to Kiambu Governor Kimani<br \/>\nWamatangi, as well as other businesses such as liquor outlets and beauty<br \/>\nsalons, in an operation supervised by security officers who patrolled the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a subsequent statement released on Wednesday, the State<br \/>\ncorporation revealed plans to construct a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National<br \/>\nStadium and a railway spur line from the Nairobi Central station through Nyayo<br \/>\nNational Stadium area, Kibera, to Talanta Sports City Stadium to ease movement<br \/>\nduring the AFCON tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The corporation stated that all encroachers of the said land<br \/>\nwere issued with notices in advance to vacate the railway corridor to pave way<br \/>\nfor the construction of the station and spur line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;Kenya Railways is in the process of evicting all<br \/>\nencroachers as we repossess all the land that has been identified for the above<br \/>\nmentioned development,&#8221; read part of the statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;Therefore, take note that any illegal<br \/>\nstructures\/property found on the corridor will be demolished and\/or removed<br \/>\nwithout further notice and at the encroacher&#8217;s risk and cost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Following the demolition, Wamatangi visited the site and<br \/>\ntermed the move as \u201cpolitical persecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;I started here in 1994 washing cars. Then I started<br \/>\nselling cars. I have been here for years. When I took this premise, I took a<br \/>\n65-year lease for this property from Kenya Railways.
