[File, Standard]&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">President William Ruto has defended Kenya\u2019s decision to keep the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=00670382e45108aae&amp;q=https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/north-eastern\/article\/2001547508\/terror-risks-as-somalia-border-reopening-looms&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiQvOzKjreUAxWZRKQEHR5OI6EQFnoECAMQAg&amp;usg=AOvVaw1TVvHOmp_8OSbyw6FbVAzk&amp;fexp=121636677,121636678\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Kenya\u2013Somalia <\/a>border closed, citing renewed instability in Somalia and escalating regional security concerns that have derailed earlier plans to reopen the crossing.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">Speaking during an interview with France 24 on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, President Ruto said Kenya had made significant progress toward reopening the border before fresh fighting erupted between Somalia\u2019s Federal Government and regional forces near the frontier.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">\u201cWe were moving very well until there was a huge disagreement between the government in Mogadishu and the states,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">He explained that clashes involving the Somali National Army and Jubaland forces along the border area worsened the security situation, forcing Kenya to intervene to prevent further escalation.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">\u201cIn fact, at that point, some of the Somali National Army were actually pushed into Kenya. We had to support members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=00670382e45108aae&amp;q=https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/opinion\/article\/2001547556\/open-border-but-not-at-the-cost-of-kenyan-lives&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiQvOzKjreUAxWZRKQEHR5OI6EQFnoECAoQAg&amp;usg=AOvVaw0Ap4km0Gp9BxcXaeaOyxd4&amp;fexp=121636677,121636678\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Somali National Army<\/a>, fly them, assist them, so that we could pacify and reduce the war,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">The President said the situation, which initially showed signs of improvement, deteriorated again due to political uncertainty in Somalia, including the expiry of key constitutional timelines for the presidency and parliament.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">\u201cToday, we have even a much more complicated situation because the term of parliament there expired. The term of the president is expiring, and nobody knows where it is going,\u201d Ruto said.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">He added that Kenya, alongside Ethiopia and Djibouti, has been engaged in mediation efforts between Somalia\u2019s federal government and regional administrations, but without success so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">\u201cWe have tried to broker an engagement between the states and the government in Somalia. We have not been very successful,\u201d he said.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">The Kenya\u2013Somalia border has been partially closed since 2011 due to security threats linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=00670382e45108aae&amp;q=https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/world\/sudan-war-uae-supply-weapons-rsf-b1277332.html&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjDrP77jreUAxW4NvsDHdHOItMQFnoECAUQAg&amp;usg=AOvVaw3lCaV20fby6kIkp9h81DdC&amp;fexp=121636677,121636678\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Al-Shabaab insurgents.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">Although the government had announced plans for phased reopening in 2024 and 2026, renewed insecurity has stalled implementation, with only limited trade exemptions such as miraa exports being allowed.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">President Ruto also addressed ongoing conflicts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), firmly denying allegations that Kenya is siding with any armed groups.&#13;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/lcVRGf0zjcTJeg8SaANzt4mQ3hElhtFT0FTFTKkc.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nPresident William Ruto meets with his Egpypian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi on May 12, 2026. [PCS]&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">Responding to claims that Kenya supports Sudan\u2019s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Ruto dismissed the accusations as baseless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">\u201c[Siding with RSF] is completely untrue. These are allegations made left, right and centre. They have no basis,\u201d he said.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">He argued that both the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF are responsible for the country\u2019s collapse, describing them as products of the same political breakdown. <\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">Stay informed. They have taken the country to the dogs,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">The President warned that Sudan\u2019s humanitarian crisis had reached unprecedented levels, with millions displaced and in urgent need of aid.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">\u201cThe humanitarian suffering, loss of lives, displacement in Sudan is on a scale that is unprecedented,\u201d he said, calling for urgent diplomatic intervention.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">On the DRC conflict, Ruto said Kenya had previously deployed troops under the East African Community force but withdrew after Kinshasa requested their exit. &#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">He added that peace efforts, including recent ceasefire frameworks, had not yet translated into stability on the ground.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"card-text\">\u201cThere is no predictable peace there.
