They range from inadequate route networks, to poor airline business type mixes, to lack of non-aeronautical revenue streams, to lack of transparency, to trade union opposition to corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally an opportunity arises that bucks the trend of such negativity, and even offers the prospect of being a tipping point beyond which African airports can be taken seriously by western investors.<\/p>\n<p>One of them has been the new <a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"31\" data-profiletype=\"16\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/newairports\/kigali-bugesera-international-airport\" title=\"More information on Bugesera Airport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bugesera Airport<\/a>, a facility to serve Kigali, the Rwandan capital, but that is taking a long time to build.<\/p>\n<p>Now it looks as certain as anything can be in <a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"3\" data-profiletype=\"6\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/regions\/africa\" title=\"More information on Africa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Africa<\/a> that the Abusera\/Bishoftu airport will be built near <a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"1684\" data-profiletype=\"2\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/airports\/addis-ababa-bole-international-airport-add\" title=\"More information on Addis Ababa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Addis Ababa<\/a>. Groundbreaking took place on 10-Jan-2026, marking the beginning of the first phase of development.<\/p>\n<p>It will complement the existing Bole airport, which was the third busiest in <a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"3\" data-profiletype=\"6\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/regions\/africa\" title=\"More information on Africa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Africa<\/a> in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>While not intended to replace Bole, its price tag of USD10 billion-12.5 billion (as much as the new <a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"87\" data-profiletype=\"4\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/countries\/mexico\" title=\"More information on Mexico\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico<\/a> City airport would have cost, had it been completed) suggests that it will do that eventually.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"233\" data-profiletype=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/airlines\/ethiopian-airlines-et\" title=\"More information on Ethiopian Airlines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ethiopian Airlines<\/a> believes Bole has become too small and overcrowded, that it has been expanding the airport for several decades, but it has reached the point where further upgrades are impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Now the search is on for funding, to ensure that it does not meet the same fate as the <a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"87\" data-profiletype=\"4\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/countries\/mexico\" title=\"More information on Mexico\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico<\/a> airport. That funding could come in the form of debt, equity and loans and numerous promises have been made already.<\/p>\n<p>A road show held in <a class=\"profilelink\" data-profileid=\"57\" data-profiletype=\"4\" href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/countries\/morocco\" title=\"More information on Morocco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morocco<\/a> in Dec-2025 garnered some positive feedback and interest.
