{"id":24990,"date":"2026-01-15T12:39:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T12:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/24990\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T12:39:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T12:39:19","slug":"zaha-hadid-architects-reveals-bishoftu-international-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/24990\/","title":{"rendered":"Zaha Hadid Architects reveals Bishoftu International Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/zaha-hadid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zaha Hadid Architects<\/a> has begun construction of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/airports\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">airport<\/a> in the city of Bishoftu, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ethiopia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ethiopia<\/a>, which is being billed as &#8220;the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa&#8217;s history&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Named Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), the terminal is being built 40 kilometres south of the capital Addis Ababa and is hoped to become Africa&#8217;s global aviation hub.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2286948 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bishoftu-international-airport-zaha-hadid-architects-ethiopia_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x480.jpg\" alt=\"Bishoftu International Airport (BIA) by Zaha Hadid Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1331\"  \/>Zaha Hadid Architects is designing Bishoftu International Airport in Ethiopia<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bishoftu International Airport is a visionary project for Ethiopia and Africa as a whole,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaha-hadid.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zaha Hadid Architects<\/a>&#8216; director of aviation Cristiano Ceccato de Sabata.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Airports bring people together and bridge national divides. Zaha Hadid Architects is honoured to be part of its development \u2013 connecting every region of the continent as Africa&#8217;s global gateway.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2286939 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bishoftu-international-airport-zaha-hadid-architects-ethiopia_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x571.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial render of airport in Ethiopia\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1583\"  \/>Being built 40 kilometres south of Addis Ababa<\/p>\n<p>BIA&#8217;s first phase is scheduled to open in 2030, operated by the carrier Ethiopian Airlines.<\/p>\n<p>This phase will comprise a 660,000-square-metre terminal and two runways that serve 60 million passengers annually. This number is expected to increase to 110 million passengers once the airport is completed with four runways and parking for 270 aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bishoftu International Airport will be the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa&#8217;s history, more than four times the capacity of Ethiopia&#8217;s current main airport, which will reach its limits on existing traffic in the next two to three years,\u201d said Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2286941 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bishoftu-international-airport-zaha-hadid-architects-ethiopia_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1035.jpg\" alt=\"Airport atrium by Zaha Hadid Architects\" width=\"1946\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It will be &#8220;the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa&#8217;s history&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>BIA will have a modular structure composed of concrete and steel, manufactured locally in Bishoftu.<\/p>\n<p>It will be connected to Addis Ababa and the capital&#8217;s existing Bole Airport via a high-speed rail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2286946 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bishoftu-international-airport-zaha-hadid-architects-ethiopia_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x480.jpg\" alt=\"Bishoftu International Airport (BIA) by Zaha Hadid Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1331\"  \/>The terminal will be organised around a central spine<\/p>\n<p>Inside, each of the airport&#8217;s piers will have unique designs and colour palettes, which Zaha Hadid Architects said will &#8220;reflect the diverse regions of Ethiopia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The terminal plan will be organised around a central spine, modelled on the Great Rift Valley that extends from the Middle East to East Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/09\/26\/zaha-hadid-architects-starfish-beijing-daxing-international-airport\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/zaha-hadid-architects-beijing-daxing-international-airport-china_dezeen_1704_col_2-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Zaha Hadid Architects Beijing Daxing airport\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Zaha Hadid Architects&#8217; giant starfish-shaped airport opens in Beijing\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This spine is hoped to optimise circulation while minimising transfer distances, with 80 per cent of passengers forecasted to transit without leaving the airport.<\/p>\n<p>This high number of transfers means BIA will also incorporate &#8220;extensive amenities for transiting passengers&#8221;, including an airside hotel, dining facilities and outdoor areas landscaped with native plants.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2286945 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bishoftu-international-airport-zaha-hadid-architects-ethiopia_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Render of airport lounge\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1329\"  \/>It is expected to accommodate 110 million passengers annually<\/p>\n<p>According to Zaha Hadid Architects, the terminal is designed to achieve LEED Gold \u2013 the second-highest certification level awarded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Green Building Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Natural ventilation and solar shading will be utilised throughout, while photovoltaic arrays will contribute to the terminal&#8217;s energy demands. The project will be complete with stormwater channels that direct to newly created wetlands and bioswales.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2286947 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bishoftu-international-airport-zaha-hadid-architects-ethiopia_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Bishoftu International Airport (BIA) by Zaha Hadid Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>The interior design will &#8220;reflect the diverse regions of Ethiopia&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/patrik-schumacher\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patrik Schumacher<\/a>, Zaha Hadid Architects is a UK architecture studio founded in 1979 by the late British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid.
