{"id":250896,"date":"2026-05-24T23:33:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T23:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/250896\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T23:33:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T23:33:21","slug":"gauteng-ordered-to-pay-putco-r154m-over-unpaid-bus-subsidies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/250896\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng ordered to pay Putco R154m over unpaid bus subsidies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Pretoria high court has ordered the Gauteng transport department to pay more than R154m to bus operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sowetan.co.za\/news\/2026-05-22-commuters-dread-higher-travel-costs-as-putco-fare-hike-set-to-take-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sowetan.co.za\/news\/2026-05-22-commuters-dread-higher-travel-costs-as-putco-fare-hike-set-to-take-effect\/\">Putco <\/a>over unpaid subsidised bus service contracts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a judgment handed down on May 13, judge Anthony Millar ruled in favour of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sowetan.co.za\/news\/2026-05-21-listen-putco-weekly-commuters-could-pay-up-to-r43-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sowetan.co.za\/news\/2026-05-21-listen-putco-weekly-commuters-could-pay-up-to-r43-more\/\">Putco<\/a> and directed the roads and transport department to settle the outstanding amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe first and second respondents are directed to make payment within five court days of this order of the outstanding amount due to the applicant for the applicant\u2019s operated scheduled kilometres \u2014 as more fully set out in the founding affidavit \u2014 amounting to R154,400,171.87,\u201d Millar ruled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The dispute relates to contracts signed on June 30 2023 between Putco and the department for the provision of subsidised commuter bus services. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to court papers, Putco approached the court after claiming the department failed to pay for kilometres operated during February and part of March 2026, despite the company continuing to render services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Millar said the department had not disputed that the services were rendered by Putco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt is common cause that the applicant rendered the services and incurred the expenditure associated therewith,\u201d he said in the judgment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The department could not continue benefiting from services while withholding payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe respondents cannot approbate and reprobate.
