{"id":25769,"date":"2026-01-15T20:11:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T20:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/25769\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T20:11:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T20:11:08","slug":"120-ghanaian-nurses-to-arrive-next-weekend-to-bolster-public-health-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/25769\/","title":{"rendered":"120 Ghanaian nurses to arrive next weekend to bolster public health system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"80\" data-end=\"294\">One hundred and twenty nurses from the Republic of Ghana are scheduled to arrive in Antigua and Barbuda next weekend, as the government takes steps to address staffing shortages within the public healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Advertisement &#8211;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"296\" data-end=\"515\">The nurses are expected to arrive on January 23, according to Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Maurice Merchant, who made the announcement during Thursday\u2019s post-Cabinet media briefing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"695\">\u201cCabinet welcomed the arrival of 120 nurses from the Republic of Ghana,\u201d Merchant said, adding that they \u201cwill serve within the public health care system of Antigua and Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"894\">Merchant said the nurses will be deployed mainly at the Celeste Bird Medical Centre, with others assigned to community health clinics, schools and additional health institutions across the country.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"1115\">\u201cThese are highly trained, qualified individuals coming out of Ghana,\u201d he said. \u201cMost of them are experienced nurses and they are expected to make an impact within the healthcare delivery system in Antigua and Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1117\" data-end=\"1328\">He explained that the additional nursing staff is expected to ease the burden on existing healthcare workers, particularly as the country continues to experience the loss of local nurses to overseas recruitment.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caribbeannationalweekly.com\/ads\/casa-youth-classic-2025-728x90\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"728\" height=\"91\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CASA-Banner.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" alt=\"CASA Banner\" decoding=\"async\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1479\">\u201cOn a weekly basis, our nurses migrate,\u201d Merchant said. \u201cOur nurses are being poached because of their standards, because of how qualified they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1722\">Merchant noted that the recruitment of Ghanaian nurses is part of a contractual arrangement between Antigua and Barbuda and Ghana, and represents one component of the government\u2019s broader response to workforce shortages in the health sector.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1921\">\u201cImporting of nurses from Ghana is one aspect.
