The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has dismissed claims that there is an internal plot by some Members of Parliament to unseat Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader in Parliament.<\/p>\n

According to Okyere Baafi, there have been no discussions or indications of any such agenda within the caucus.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the Minority in Parliament remains united and is working together without any intention by individuals to undermine or replace the Effutu MP.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV on 14 January 2026, Okyere Baafi said he does not believe anyone is currently scheming to remove Afenyo-Markin from his position.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe that anybody wants to remove Afenyo-Markin for now, even though no position in Parliament is permanent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe party can decide at any time for someone else to take up the position, but as things stand now, I am not aware of anyone scheming or aiming for his seat. We don\u2019t have any animosity among us.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further dismissed suggestions of internal division, describing such claims as unfounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor now, I don\u2019t foresee anything like that happening,\u201d he added, emphasising that the caucus remains focused on its collective responsibilities.<\/p>\n

His comment follows, the New Patriotic Party<\/a> (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong<\/a>\u2019s claim that he has called on the Minority Leader to step down from his position.<\/p>\n

According to Agyapong, there are individuals within the party who are actively seeking the Effutu Member of Parliament’s position as Minority leader.<\/p>\n

He said he has advised the Minority Leader to relinquish his position and allow those challenging him to take over.<\/p>\n

Agyapong further stated that Afenyo-Markin is financially well-established and therefore does not need to cling to the parliamentary position.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is well to do, so he should leave the position for those who are fighting him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview on UTV on December 15, 2025, Agyapong claimed that criticisms of Afenyo-Markin\u2019s leadership style are driven by internal power struggles within the party.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose criticising Alexander Afenyo-Markin\u2019s leadership want positions, some people are arguing that the Minority Leader should come from the Eastern Region or the Ashanti Region. I have told him to leave the position for them and I have personally called him to tell him to step down from the position.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he deliberately refrained from mentioning the names of those pushing for the position.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was in the olden days, I would have mention all those seeking his position\u2019s names but now I won\u2019t. He can eat for the rest of his life and it shouldn\u2019t look like being an MP is the only way to survive,\u201d Agyapong stated.<\/p>\n

Afenyo-Markin has faced criticism over his leadership style from various quarters, including Solomon Owusu, a Senior Communicator for the Movement for Change.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the NPP has a weak leader like Afenyo-Markin, then it is no surprise the party keeps collapsing,\u201d Owusu remarked.<\/p>\n
