{"id":2615,"date":"2026-01-04T11:52:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T11:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/2615\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T11:52:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T11:52:07","slug":"m1-highway-completely-closed-after-horrific-multi-vehicle-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/2615\/","title":{"rendered":"M1 Highway completely closed after horrific multi-vehicle accident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\tThe accident occurred on Sunday morning, 4 January 2026, as thousands of motorists returned from their festive break.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\u200bThe Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is currently on the scene of a horrific multi-vehicle accident on the M1 Northbound before the Glenhove Road off-ramp in Houghton Estate.<\/p>\n<p>The accident occurred on Sunday morning, 4 January 2026, as thousands of motorists returned from their festive break. <\/p>\n<p>Accident <\/p>\n<p>Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla said three motor vehicles were involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegrettably, currently two fatalities have been confirmed on-site. JMPD officers are present. Fire and Rescue services are currently en route to assist with reported entrapment in the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u201dThe M1 North is completely closed to traffic at 11th Avenue. All northbound lanes are blocked to allow emergency services to operate and facilitate accident investigations,\u201d Fihla said. <\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/congestions-all-major-routes-festive-holiday-ends\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">End of festive season to bring heavy traffic on all major routes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alternate routes <\/p>\n<p>Fihla advised motorists to avoid the M1 North between 11th Avenue and Glenhove Road. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cExpect heavy delays in the surrounding Houghton and Melrose areas. Use alternative routes such as Oxford Road, Louis Botha Avenue and Jan Smuts Avenue.<br \/>\u200b<br \/>\u201cThe roadway is expected to remain closed for some time while the scene is cleared and processed.
