{"id":26738,"date":"2026-01-16T08:57:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T08:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/26738\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T08:57:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T08:57:15","slug":"un-joins-nigeria-in-commemorating-armed-forces-remembrance-day-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/26738\/","title":{"rendered":"UN joins Nigeria in commemorating Armed Forces Remembrance Day in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"710\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Untitled-1-1885.png\" class=\"single-image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The United Nations and members of the diplomatic corps on Thursday joined Nigeria to pay tribute to fallen heroes at the Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day.<br \/>The UN deputy secretary-general, Amina Mohammed, at the commemoration held at the Nigerian House in New York, commended Nigeria for its leadership role in Africa and globally.<br \/>Ms Mohammed said Nigeria remained one of the largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations.<br \/>She noted that for decades, Nigerian soldiers had served under the UN flag in some of the world\u2019s most dangerous theatres and as force commanders leading complex peacekeeping missions.<br \/>According to her, Nigerian troops are widely recognised for their integrity, respect for the UN mandate, and strong commitment to protecting civilians.<br \/>She said the record of Nigerian peacekeepers demonstrated the country\u2019s commitment to peace through action, often far from home.<br \/>The UN deputy secretary-general also commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing ambassadors to Nigerian missions abroad.<br \/>Ms Mohammed said that since joining the United Nations in 1960, Nigeria had consistently demonstrated its commitment to peace beyond its borders.<br \/>She stressed that the commitment was not only to Nigeria\u2019s own security, but also to its neighbours and the wider world.<br \/>In his tribute, Nigeria\u2019s defence adviser to the UN, Edward Koleoso, said the fallen soldiers stood firm when others wavered and \u201cplaced the survival of our Republic above their own lives\u201d.<br \/>He acknowledged that society owes the fallen heroes a debt that can never be fully repaid.<br \/>Charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires at the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN, Syndoph Endoni, praised the dedication and professionalism of the men and women of the Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p>(NAN)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gazettengr.com\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 100%;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Artboard-14.png\" alt=\"Banner\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block;\"\/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p> We have recently deactivated our website&#8217;s comment provider in favour of other channels of distribution and commentary.
