{"id":277113,"date":"2026-06-10T11:09:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T11:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/277113\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T11:09:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T11:09:10","slug":"three-convicted-for-murder-of-british-botanists-in-kzn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/277113\/","title":{"rendered":"Three convicted for murder of British botanists in KZN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court in Durban has convicted Fatima Bibi Patel, Sayefudeen Aslam Del Vecchio and Musa Jackson on <a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/news\/crime-and-courts\/2026-06-04-trial-of-british-botanists-murder-case-uncovers-shocking-details\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft and two counts of murder.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Del Vecchio was also convicted of malicious injury to property.<\/p>\n<p>The convictions stem from the kidnapping and murder of renowned British botanists Dr Rodney Saunders and Dr Rachel Saunders in the Ngoya Forest in Zululand between 8 and 14 February 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The couple had travelled to the forest in search of rare and unique seeds after completing filming for a BBC documentary in the Drakensberg.<\/p>\n<p>On 8 February 2018, the Saunders were travelling with research equipment and camping gear when they were accosted, kidnapped and robbed by the accused.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that the accused gained access to banking applications on the couple&#8217;s mobile phones and carried out numerous transactions and cash withdrawals totalling more than R700,000.<\/p>\n<p>The Saunders were later <a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/thepost\/news\/2026-06-05-botanists-murder-accused-fatima-patel-and-aslam-del-vecchio-refuse-to-leave-holding-cells\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">murdered and their bodies were discovered<\/a> a week later on the banks of the Tugela River.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate matter, Del Vecchio was found guilty of malicious injury to property after setting fire to three Tongaat Hulett farms between Sibaya and Umdloti in September 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The court found that the arson followed the company&#8217;s refusal to allow him access to the farms.
