The facility adds to a growing national charging network being developed to support the country’s rapidly expanding electric mobility sector.

Developed by the state-owned Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) in partnership with the Industrial Parks Development Corporation, the station was officially launched on June 17. EEU Chief Executive Officer Getu Geremew said the utility is working to establish more than 40 charging stations nationwide as demand for electric vehicles continues to grow.

The expansion is not limited to the capital. Charging services have already been introduced in Bishoftu, Mojo, Batu, Adama, Shashemene and Hawassa, while authorities plan to add 16 more stations along the Ethio-Djibouti transport corridor.

Government officials estimate that more than 115,000 electric vehicles are currently operating in Ethiopia, although some authorities place the figure closer to 140,000. Growth in the sector has accelerated since the government’s 2024 decision to halt imports of new gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles.

The rise in vehicle numbers has increased pressure on charging infrastructure. Government estimates indicate that Addis Ababa requires more than 1,100 charging stations, compared with roughly 200 currently in operation, while national plans call for the development of more than 2,200 fast-charging stations.

Ethiopia’s electric mobility programme is supported by a power sector that relies heavily on renewable energy. More than 90% of the country’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, primarily hydropower, while petroleum products are largely imported.

Authorities are also seeking to expand domestic vehicle production. State Minister of Transport and Logistics Bareo Hassen recently said around 17 electric vehicle assembly plants have already been established in the country, with plans to increase local manufacturing capacity by 2030.

Alongside public investment, private-sector participation in charging infrastructure is also increasing. In April, Ethio Telecom inaugurated its first ultra-fast charging station outside Addis Ababa in Adama, adding to efforts to expand charging services beyond the capital.

By Cynthia Ebot Takang

Ethiopia has opened a new charging station capable of serving 24 vehicles simultaneously as part of…

[25
61661,1256,17223,65,29468,6278,49499,13219,1702
post-292866","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ethiopia","tag-charging","tag-country","tag-electric","tag-ethiopia","tag-mobility","tag-station","tag-stations","tag-vehicle","tag-vehicles
["GET
