Kenya has secured a major diplomatic and technological
\nmilestone after being selected to host the fourth edition of the Responsible AI
\nin the Military Domain (REAIM) Summit in April 2027.<\/p>\n
Kenya becomes the first African nation and the
\nfirst country in the Global South to host the summit.<\/p>\n
The announcement was made in Geneva by Kenya’s\u00a0Special Envoy on Technology Ambassador Philip Thigo,\u00a0on behalf of Defence Cabinet Secretary
\nSoipan Tuya, during the AI, Security and Ethics Conference.<\/p>\n
The summit, which brings together governments, defence
\ninstitutions, technology companies, academia and international organisations,
\nfocuses on ensuring the responsible development and deployment of artificial
\nintelligence in military operations while safeguarding international peace and
\nsecurity.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the announcement, Ambassador Thigo said
\nthe Nairobi summit would shift attention from policy discussions to practical
\nimplementation of responsible AI frameworks.<\/p>\n
“The Summit will focus on practical
\nimplementation of responsible AI through capacity building, institutional
\nreadiness, international cooperation, and deeper engagement between
\ngovernments, defence institutions, industry, academia and international
\norganisations,” he said.<\/p>\n
He added that Kenya was ready to welcome the
\ninternational community to Nairobi for critical discussions on the intersection
\nof artificial intelligence, security, ethics and global peace.<\/p>\n
“Kenya looks forward to welcoming the global
\ncommunity to Nairobi to shape the crucial frameworks where military artificial
\nintelligence meets international peace, safety, and ethics,” Thigo said.<\/p>\n
The hosting rights mark a significant achievement for
\nKenya’s growing influence in global technology governance and digital
\ndiplomacy.<\/p>\n
Thigo said the decision places Nairobi at the centre of international
\nconversations on how emerging technologies can be deployed responsibly within
\ndefence and security sectors.<\/p>\n
The REAIM Summit has emerged as one of the world’s
\nleading platforms addressing the opportunities and risks associated with
\nmilitary applications of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
Previous editions have largely been hosted in Europe
\nand Asia, making Kenya’s selection a landmark moment for Africa’s participation
\nin shaping global AI governance.<\/p>\n
The 2027 summit is expected to attract senior
\ngovernment officials, military leaders, technology experts, researchers and
\npolicymakers from across the world, further strengthening Kenya’s position as a
\nregional hub for innovation, diplomacy and emerging technologies.<\/p>\n
The third REAIM Summit was held
\nin the Spanish city of A Coru\u00f1a in
\nFebruary 2026.<\/p>\n
Hosted by Spain, the 2026 summit sought to move beyond broad principles and
\nfocus on practical and realistic measures for implementing responsible military
\nAI governance.<\/p>\n
Another key objective was to strengthen the summit’s multi-stakeholder
\napproach by fostering cooperation among experts from different regions and
\ndisciplines.<\/p>\n
Discussions focused on the technological, military, ethical, legal and
\nsocial implications of military artificial intelligence and how countries can
\nwork together to manage emerging risks.<\/p>\n
Kenya is now set to take over as host of the
\nfourth REAIM Summit in April 2027, marking the first time the global gathering
