Instead, it was a showcase of how decisive individual performances can shape a World Cup match.

While South Korea controlled much of the ball and spent long periods camped in the South African half, Bafana Bafana’s biggest performers delivered when it mattered most. In contrast, South Korea’s star names struggled to influence proceedings, ultimately costing them a result that would have secured qualification.

Maseko Rose to the Occasion

The headline performer was always going to be Thapelo Maseko.

His 63rd-minute goal secured not only the victory but also South Africa’s first-ever place in the World Cup knockout stages. After being one of South Africa’s most dangerous attacking outlets throughout the tournament, Maseko once again proved decisive when the opportunity arrived. His composed finish from Tshepang Moremi’s delivery was the defining moment of the match and instantly entered South African football folklore.

What made Maseko’s performance particularly impressive was his willingness to constantly run beyond the South Korean defence. Even when South Africa had little possession, he remained a threat and gave the Asian side something to think about whenever they committed players forward.

PHOTO: FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A match between South Africa and Korea Republic at Monterrey Stadium on June 24, 2026 in Guadalupe, Mexico. (Photo by Michael Regan – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)Moremi and Modiba Changed the Match

Maseko scored the goal, but two teammates played equally important roles in securing the result.

Tshepang Moremi made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, providing the assist for the winner shortly after his introduction. His energy transformed South Africa’s attacking threat and gave the team a direct outlet during a difficult second half.

Defensively, Aubrey Modiba produced arguably the most important moment outside of the goal itself. With South Korea pushing for an equaliser, his goal-line clearance preserved South Africa’s advantage and highlighted the determination that underpinned the entire performance.

Alongside captain Ronwen Williams, who marshalled the defence superbly, South Africa’s experienced leaders ensured the pressure never became overwhelming.

South Korea’s Stars Never Took Control

For South Korea, the story was very different.

The decision to leave captain Son Heung-min on the bench for the first half dominated pre-match discussion. Introduced after the interval, Son was unable to inspire the comeback his side desperately needed, with South Korea continuing to struggle for creativity despite their dominance of possession.

Lee Kang-in showed flashes of quality and was among South Korea’s brighter performers, but even he found it difficult to unlock South Africa’s disciplined defensive structure. Meanwhile, Hwang Hee-chan and Oh Hyeon-gyu were largely kept quiet throughout the contest.

PHOTO: FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A match between South Africa and Korea Republic at Monterrey Stadium on June 24, 2026 in Guadalupe, Mexico. (Photo by Julian Finney – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)The Difference Was Individual Impact

South Korea finished with more possession and more territory, but football matches are rarely decided by statistics alone.

South Africa’s leading players produced decisive moments. South Korea’s did not.

Maseko delivered the goal, Moremi provided the assist, Modiba protected the lead and Williams organised the resistance. Those contributions proved enough to make history.

At the World Cup, the margins are often fine. Against South Korea, South Africa’s biggest names ensured they landed on the right side of them.

South Africa’s historic 1-0 victory over South Korea was not a triumph built on possession or territorial dominance.…

[52
145,95483,131,1938,150323,10574
post-301524","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-south-africa","tag-bafana-bafana","tag-son-heung-min","tag-south-africa","tag-south-korea","tag-thapelo-maseko","tag-world-cup-2026
["GET
