Humanitarian position\"\/><\/p>\n<p>New York (HOL) \u2014 United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres on Friday appointed Mohamed Yahya of Somalia as assistant secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and deputy emergency relief coordinator in the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Yahya will succeed Joyce Msuya of Tanzania, whom the secretary-general and the emergency relief coordinator thanked for her service to humanitarian work.<\/p>\n<p>Yahya brings more than two decades of experience in development, humanitarian action and peacebuilding across Africa and South Asia. His work has included senior roles at U.N. headquarters, regional offices and field missions.<\/p>\n<p>He currently serves as the U.N. resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator in Pakistan, where he leads one of the largest U.N. presences in Asia and the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>In that role, Yahya coordinated the U.N. response to the 2025 floods in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Before his appointment in Pakistan, Yahya served as the U.N.
