At least 5 killed after truck collides with matatu at Kikopey<\/p>\n

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has expressed deep sorrow
\nfollowing a series of tragic road traffic crashes that have claimed several
\nlives and left others injured along major highways within the last 24 hours.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the authority said the incidents
\noccurred on the Nairobi\u2013Mombasa Highway and the Gilgil\u2013Nakuru Highway,
\ninvolving public service vehicles, commercial trucks and private operators.<\/p>\n

NTSA extended its condolences to families who lost loved ones and wished a
\nspeedy recovery to those injured.<\/p>\n

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic road traffic crashes that have claimed several lives and left others injured along major highways in the last 24 hours,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

One of the fatal crashes occurred in the Konza
\narea along the Nairobi\u2013Mombasa Highway and involved a bus operated by Tahmeed
\nExpress Limited and a matatu belonging to Naekana Route 139 Sacco.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary reports, the matatu driver attempted to overtake
\nanother vehicle, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming bus. <\/p>\n

The
\nimpact resulted in multiple casualties, with investigations ongoing to
\nestablish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.<\/p>\n

Another incident was reported in the Kikopey
\narea along the Gilgil\u2013Nakuru Highway. <\/p>\n

The crash involved a matatu, a foreign-registered truck and a stalled trailer.<\/p>\n

NTSA said that preliminary findings indicate that the foreign-registered
\ntruck failed to maintain a safe following distance and rammed into the matatu
\nfrom behind. <\/p>\n

Following the initial impact, the matatu was pushed into a
\nstationary trailer, compounding the severity of the crash.<\/p>\n

A third incident was reported at Taita Village
\nalong the Nairobi\u2013Mombasa Highway and involved a bus operated by Janan Bus
\nServices.<\/p>\n

NTSA said initial reports indicate that the bus driver failed to maintain
\nthe proper lane while overtaking and subsequently lost control of the vehicle.<\/p>\n


\nNo fatalities were recorded in this incident, although passengers sustained
\ninjuries.<\/p>\n

The Authority said investigations into all the
\ncrashes are ongoing and that further updates will be issued as more information
\nbecomes available.<\/p>\n

The authority noted that preliminary findings point to dangerous overtaking,
\nfailure to maintain safe following distances and loss of vehicle control as
\nrecurring risk factors in the incidents.<\/p>\n

NTSA urged all road users to exercise extreme
\ncaution and strictly adhere to traffic rules, particularly as schools reopen
\nand children travel back to school next week.<\/p>\n

They emphasised the need for drivers to observe speed limits, avoid reckless
