The agreement, still subject to IMF management approval, brings Zimbabwe closer to its goal of clearing long-standing arrears and restructuring its debt.

According to the IMF, implementation of the program through the end of March 2026 has been broadly satisfactory. The Fund said Zimbabwe met all of its quantitative targets, including those covering the primary fiscal balance, net international reserves, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) lending to the non-financial public sector, new non-concessional external borrowing, and growth in the ZiG monetary base. Zimbabwe also met all indicative targets except one related to protected and priority social spending.

IMF Sees Resilient Economy

The IMF said Zimbabwe’s economy has continued to perform well despite a difficult global environment. After growing 8.3% in 2025, the economy is projected to expand by 5% in 2026, supported by strong agricultural and mining output as well as favorable gold prices. Inflation is expected to average about 5.1%.

To sustain that performance, the IMF urged the government to maintain fiscal discipline, strengthen protection for social spending, continue monetary and foreign exchange reforms, improve governance, and reinforce fiscal risk management. The Fund also recommended tighter oversight of gold delivery incentive schemes and further reforms to public financial management.

A Step Toward Normalizing Relations with Creditors

The positive review forms part of Zimbabwe’s broader effort to normalize relations with international creditors after more than two decades of economic crisis and mounting debt arrears. The country previously entered an IMF Staff-Monitored Program in 2019, but that effort ended after Zimbabwe failed to meet the agreed reform commitments.

The current program does not include IMF financing. Instead, it is intended to help Zimbabwe establish a track record of sound economic policies that supports its arrears clearance and debt restructuring strategy. Looking ahead, the IMF expects economic growth to moderate to 4.2% in 2027.

That outlook remains exposed to several risks, including the possibility of a more severe El Niño that could weigh on agricultural production, as well as an escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Ingrid Haffiny

Zimbabwe has cleared another milestone in its effort to restructure debt and normalize relations with international creditors.…

[60
2185,31902,3152,693,1409,19507,461,106
post-323931","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-zimbabwe","tag-debt","tag-fiscal","tag-fund","tag-imf","tag-international","tag-program","tag-the","tag-zimbabwe
["GET
