Capitec has confirmed details of how smart ID card applications will be handled at its branches under the Department of Home Affairs\u2019 new digital partnership model.<\/p>\n

The bank is one of nine financial institutions working with Home Affairs to expand access to smart ID services through bank branches across South Africa, using a digital-first system rather than on-site Home Affairs staff.<\/p>\n

Under the arrangement, Capitec will process smart ID applications via its self-service terminals, with an additional charge applied on top of the standard Home Affairs fee.<\/p>\n

Home Affairs\u2019 big Smart ID expansion<\/p>\n

According to Mybroadband<\/a>, Capitec confirmed that South Africans applying for a smart ID card at its branches will pay a total of R150, made up of the standard R140 Department of Home Affairs (DHA) fee plus a R10 logistics charge.<\/p>\n

The bank also said it plans to roll out the service to:<\/p>\n

100 branches by mid-2026<\/p>\n

300 branches by the end of 2026<\/p>\n

With more than 850 branches nationwide, including in rural towns and townships, Capitec is expected to play a major role in improving access.<\/p>\n

Home Affairs<\/a> launched its new partnership model back in August 2025 to scale services far beyond the roughly 30 bank branches that currently offer smart ID and passport applications.<\/p>\n
