{"id":3448,"date":"2026-01-04T19:33:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T19:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/3448\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T19:33:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T19:33:23","slug":"east-london-security-guard-assault-suspect-suffers-setback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/3448\/","title":{"rendered":"East London security guard assault: Suspect suffers setback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\tOn Wednesday, mining giant Exxaro identified the man in the viral video as an employee of a technology company.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>Things have got worse for one of the suspects arrested for assaulting a security guard in the Eastern Cape earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Baagi Technology, where he is an independent contractor, has not renewed his contract.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/mining-giant-bars-suspect-viral-east-london-security-guard-assault\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">On Wednesday, mining giant Exxaro identified the man <\/a>in the viral video as an employee of contractor Baaqi Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The mining company barred the contractor from entering its premises following the assault.<\/p>\n<p>Contract not renewed<\/p>\n<p>Baagi Technology told The Citizen, they \u201cunequivocally condemn violence\u201d and any form of unlawful conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company has been referenced publicly in relation to an alleged perpetrator who was associated with Baagi through an independent contractor arrangement. That agreement reached its contractual end on 31 December 2025 and was not extended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe matter has been addressed strictly in accordance with the applicable contractual and governance processes. Baagi Technology remains committed to professionalism, ethical conduct, and responsible corporate governance,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/undocumented-foreign-national-jumps-off-bridge-joburg-escape-police\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WATCH: Undocumented foreign national jumps off bridge in Joburg to escape police<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vicious assault<\/p>\n<p>The assault came after a group of men was captured on video allegedly kicking and beating 34-year-old Xolisile Nogwele, a guard at Ebuhlanti Marina Glen in East London on New Year\u2019s Day, triggering widespread outrage on social media and calls for the perpetrators to be arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Nogwele, on social media, said it was meant to be a \u201cnormal day\u201d at work, but it changed when he asked one of the men in the video to move their car, which was blocking another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was welcomed with \u2018Xa singayisusi uzokwenza ntoni?\u2018 Loosely translated, \u2018what are you going to do if we don\u2019t move it\u2019. One of the guys grabbed me by my neck, and things got worse as in the video. A case has been opened, and we pray that the law will take its course.\u201d [SIC].<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These individuals who assaulted this man must be found and held accountable. An attorney will do that case without paying for the victim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arrests<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the police arrested two people and said further arrests were likely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suspects, who face charges of common assault, were processed and released on warning on 1 January 2026. They are scheduled to appear in the East London Magistrate\u2019s Court on 7 January 2026,\u201d said police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
