{"id":354,"date":"2026-01-03T13:17:05","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T13:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/354\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T13:17:05","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T13:17:05","slug":"morocco-coach-warns-of-trap-as-they-face-tanzania-in-last-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/354\/","title":{"rendered":"Morocco coach warns of trap as they face Tanzania in last 16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RABAT, Jan 3 (Reuters) &#8211; Africa Cup of Nations hosts Morocco have been warned not to get too confident about their chances in Sunday\u2019s last-16 clash against underdogs Tanzania, with coach Walid Regragui saying lack of humility has cost them in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Morocco are the top ranked team at the tournament and runaway favourites and look to have an easy passage into the quarter-finals at the expense of Tanzania, who squeezed into the knockout stage among the four best third placed finishers.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"promo-box\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__dark-grey__UFC18 text-module__regular__qJJtA text-module__small__sph8i body-module__base__o--Cl body-module__small_body__gOmDf article-body-module__promo-box__hVl8h\"> Sign up  <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/soccer\/morocco-coach-warns-trap-they-face-tanzania-last-16-2026-01-03\/undefined?location=article-paragraph&amp;redirectUrl=%2Fsports%2Fsoccer%2Fmorocco-coach-warns-trap-they-face-tanzania-last-16-2026-01-03%2F\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They did so without winning a game and their two-point haul from three Group C matches is the lowest tally of points in tournament history for a team advancing out of the first round and into the last-16.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hear that we are the overwhelming favourites, that we should win easily, and everyone says that if Morocco do not win, it is a failure, that if Morocco does not win easily, it is a failure,\u201d Regragui said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job and the job of the staff and the senior players is to keep our feet on the ground and remember why Morocco has not won the Cup of Nations in 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not won it because I think that at some point, we lacked humility in every competition, and we must not fall into that trap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Morocco\u2019s only previous Cup of Nations success was in 1976 and in recent editions they have crashed out to unfancied opposition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will keep our feet on the ground, we will respect this Tanzanian team,\u201d the coach added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are a team that is growing, they are developing their infrastructure, they are developing their league with two big clubs, and they have very good local players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt won\u2019t be an easy match. We will play to our strengths so as not to give them any hope of causing an upset.
