{"id":354566,"date":"2026-07-30T00:44:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T00:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/354566\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T00:44:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T00:44:31","slug":"university-of-ghana-embeds-coding-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/354566\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Ghana embeds coding programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1pTQmEN8iqJpL1J7YWJavcCa2tRdEfWDK05sicahYMSTznZtIaDoDJk2dOWk4MEuZ1gkTX7ONqYBuQom-_5SJoHTe9fkRLMjjrQ.jpeg\" alt=\"Samuel Nartey George, Ghana\u2019s ICT minister (Image source: ICT ministry, Facebook).\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" style=\"max-width:100%;object-fit:fill;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Samuel Nartey George, Ghana\u2019s ICT minister (Image source: ICT ministry, Facebook). <\/p>\n<p>The University of Ghana has become the first tertiary institution in the country to permanently integrate the government\u2019s One Million Coders Programme into its academic curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>The move embeds <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/clk?id=6759218543&amp;iu=\/22684935574\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-primary\" data-v-da29e75f=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> digital  <\/a> skills training into formal education as part of Ghana\u2019s broader digital transformation strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Vice-chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo announced the decision during the presentation of ICT equipment to the university by government on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in April 2025, the programme aims to train one million young Ghanaians in advanced digital skills by 2030, to improve employability, drive innovation and support economic transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation Samuel Nartey George described the move as a significant step towards building a digitally skilled workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoding, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital literacy should no longer be treated as optional skills, but as essential competencies for graduates across all disciplines,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first of several such decisions by our public universities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>George said AI is transforming education, healthcare, business and public services, making digital skills essential regardless of field of study.<\/p>\n<p>He said embedding the programme into the curriculum will ensure graduates acquire practical digital skills needed to compete globally.<\/p>\n<p>George also called on private sector organisations to support the initiative through partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>He urged technology companies, telecom operators, financial institutions and other organisations to contribute through internships, mentorship, scholarships, equipment donations and employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusinesses will ultimately benefit from the digitally skilled workforce being developed through the One Million Coders Programme,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Samuel Nartey George, Ghana\u2019s ICT minister (Image source: ICT ministry, Facebook).
