Authorities said the vehicle veered off the road before plunging into the ravine.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, with ambulances continuously transporting the injured to nearby hospitals as rescue operations remained underway.

In the wake of the tragedy, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning, according to state television.

Deadly Road Accidents A Recurring Challenge

Algeria has long grappled with a high number of fatal road accidents, with authorities frequently attributing crashes to speeding, dangerous driving, poor road conditions and inadequate compliance with traffic regulations. Bus accidents often result in heavy casualties because they typically involve large numbers of passengers travelling between cities.

The latest crash comes less than a year after another major bus accident in the country. On August 15, 2025, a public transport bus crashed through the safety barrier of a bridge in Algiers before plunging into a river, killing 18 people and injuring 21 others.

Despite repeated efforts to improve road safety through stricter enforcement and awareness campaigns, serious road accidents continue to claim dozens of lives in Algeria each year. Friday’s crash is among the country’s deadliest road tragedies in recent months and has once again drawn attention to the need for stronger road safety measures.

Handpicked stories, in your inbox

A newsletter with the best of our journalism

submit

News world 25 Killed After Passenger Bus Overturns In Algeria, President Declares 3 Days Of MourningDisclaimer: Comments reflect users’ views, not News18’s.
