(EPA PHOTO)<\/p>\n<p>Uganda&#8217;s parliament has voted to approve the deployment of its military to the Gaza Strip, if it is needed \u200cas part of a multinational security force proposed under US President Donald Trump&#8217;s ceasefire plan \u200cfor the enclave.<\/p>\n<p>Before the vote, Ugandan Defence Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka told MPs Trump had, \u200cthrough emissaries, contacted Uganda&#8217;s President Yoweri Museveni in July seeking the country&#8217;s contribution to the international force.<\/p>\n<p>An Israeli official said last month people from &#8220;friendly countries&#8221; including Uganda could join the force if it was deployed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s parliamentary debate was the first time Uganda itself had \u200cpublicly acknowledged \u200cit might \u2060take part.<\/p>\n<p>After a fragile ceasefire deal was struck in \u200bOctober, Trump set out a peace plan for the Gaza Strip that provided for a surge in humanitarian aid, civilian administration by Palestinian technocrats, Hamas laying down its arms and Israeli forces withdrawing.<\/p>\n<p>The plan has stalled and the group of technocrats &#8211; known as the National Committee for \u2060the Administration of Gaza &#8211; has remained outside \u200cthe enclave.<\/p>\n<p>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ecca9e6d-46ed-460a-88f1-b4c21f49eea5.jpg\" alt=\"Ugandan troops\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"\/><br \/>\n    Uganda is one of the largest contributors of troops to peacekeeping missions in Africa. (AP PHOTO)<\/p>\n<p>Under \u200bthe plan, an International Stabilisation Force (ISF) is envisioned deploying in areas that are not \u200bunder Israeli control.<\/p>\n<p>\u200cIt is unclear when any such force will deploy.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of July, the Israeli security cabinet granted authorisation for part of the ISF, as well as representatives of the Palestinian Interim Administration, to begin work shortly in a limited area in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda is one of the largest contributors of troops to peacekeeping missions in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>It has contingents deployed in several countries including Somalia, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following the \u200binvitation \u200bby His Excellency Donald Trump &#8230; the \u200bPresident of the Republic of Uganda, is \u200cready to deploy in the Gaza Strip the desired Uganda People&#8217;s Defence Forces contingent,&#8221; Kiwanuka told MPs.<\/p>\n<p>During the debate, some MPs asked about the legal arrangement that would govern the deployment.<\/p>\n<p>Kiwanuka said a status of forces agreement would be signed after \u200bthe vote.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the Gaza Strip remains in ruins from two years of \u200bfull-scale war triggered by the \u2060Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>with DPA<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rightsportal.copyright.com.au\/licensing\/general-enquiry\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"license-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">License this article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The International Stabilisation Force is envisioned to deploy in areas not \u200bunder Israeli control.
