The government estimates the initial phase will cost about $20 million.

“This project is part of the Nagaad Project, which the Ministry of Public Works is implementing across Somalia’s federal member states,” Yusuf said.

The minister said the federal government is currently overseeing projects involving about 89 kilometers of roads in Jubaland, South West, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Puntland and Somaliland.

He said the projects are part of a broader government strategy to expand and improve Somalia’s economic infrastructure, including roads and other transport networks.

The World Bank and other international organizations are supporting the Nagaad Project, which is intended to improve infrastructure and connectivity across Somalia.

The planned Hargeisa project comes against the backdrop of Somalia’s long-running political dispute with Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not secured broad international recognition as an independent state. Somalia’s federal government continues to regard Somaliland as part of its territory.

Saturday August 8, 2026 Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s federal government has begun signing a design and feasibility study…

[51
44934,176295,131310,2650,76789,10963,19507,4962,9758,1984,41788,929
post-368726","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-somalia","tag-44934","tag-bankbacked","tag-hargeisa","tag-in","tag-launches","tag-million","tag-program","tag-project","tag-road","tag-somalia","tag-under","tag-world
["GET
