width: 100%;\"\/>Inspector General Douglas Kanja at the NPL Academy on August 12, 2026\/NPS<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Inspector General of&#13;<br \/>\nPolice Douglas Kanja has warned senior police commanders to&#13;<br \/>\nstrengthen supervision and accountability within their formations,&#13;<br \/>\nsaying officers involved in criminal activities will not be allowed&#13;<br \/>\nto damage the reputation of the National Police Service.<\/p>\n<p>Kanja said cases of&#13;<br \/>\npolice officers engaging in crime were a betrayal of the oath they&#13;<br \/>\ntook to serve and protect Kenyans, while raising concerns over weak&#13;<br \/>\nsupervision, particularly at lower levels of command.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIssues of&#13;<br \/>\nofficers engaging in crime is both a disgrace to the service and a&#13;<br \/>\nserious betrayal to the oath of office,\u201d Kanja said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the&#13;<br \/>\nemergence of such cases pointed to gaps in supervision and&#13;<br \/>\naccountability, urging senior commanders to take greater&#13;<br \/>\nresponsibility for the conduct of officers under their command.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emergence of&#13;<br \/>\nthese incidents portrays a disconnect on both supervision and&#13;<br \/>\naccountability, especially at the lower ranks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kanja directed&#13;<br \/>\nsenior commanders to maintain close supervision of their junior&#13;<br \/>\nofficers and identify those whose conduct was inconsistent with the&#13;<br \/>\nstandards expected of members of the police service.<\/p>\n<p>He said the service&#13;<br \/>\nwould not allow the actions of a few officers to undermine the work&#13;<br \/>\nof thousands of others serving professionally across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not going&#13;<br \/>\nto allow a few officers to damage the image of thousands of&#13;<br \/>\nhardworking police officers who are ready to work and are&#13;<br \/>\nprofessionals in the discharge of their duties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks came in&#13;<br \/>\nthe wake of investigations into the killing of former African&#13;<br \/>\nInstitute of Mental and Brain Health director Dr Victoria Mutiso, in&#13;<br \/>\nwhich the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said three&#13;<br \/>\npolice officers played a role.<\/p>\n<p>The murder&#13;<br \/>\ninvestigation has renewed scrutiny of the conduct of police officers&#13;<br \/>\nand the effectiveness of internal supervision mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/c71b8fbb-972b-492f-b792-bdcf2c023365.webp\" style=\"max-width: 100%; width: 100%;\"\/>Inspector General Dpuglas Kanja is received by GSU commandant Johana Tonui at NPL Academy on August 12, 2026\/NPS<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Kanja said&#13;<br \/>\ncommanders whose formations continued to post poor results in command&#13;<br \/>\nand control would face consequences, including removal from their&#13;<br \/>\ncommand responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe shall ensure&#13;<br \/>\nthat commanders posting poor results in terms of commanding controls&#13;<br \/>\nare relieved of their duties, command responsibilities and dealt with&#13;<br \/>\nprocedurally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet this message&#13;<br \/>\nreach all commanders,\u201d Kanja added, urging them to \u201cpull up their&#13;<br \/>\nsocks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The IG also raised&#13;<br \/>\nconcern over what he termed inaction or delays in responding to&#13;<br \/>\nreports made by members of the public, particularly cases involving&#13;<br \/>\nland disputes, domestic violence and threats to life.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHe said some&#13;<br \/>\nincidents that later escalated into serious crimes could have been&#13;<br \/>\nprevented had police acted promptly on earlier reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is therefore&#13;<br \/>\nsaddening to see that some of the situations we find ourselves in&#13;<br \/>\ncould have been averted through diligent and responsible policing,\u201d&#13;<br \/>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>Kanja reminded&#13;<br \/>\nofficers that they were free to consult other commanders and relevant&#13;<br \/>\noffices whenever they encountered challenges in handling cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are at&#13;<br \/>\nliberty to consult horizontally and vertically if need be,\u201d he&#13;<br \/>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/724ef16f-c7c6-4567-89e7-81cff87dcea2.webp\" style=\"max-width: 100%; width: 100%;\"\/>Inspector General Douglas Kanja (left) with other senior officers during an event at the NPL Academy on August 12, 2026\/NPS<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHe said effective&#13;<br \/>\npolicing required commanders to take ownership of complaints reported&#13;<br \/>\nwithin their areas and ensure that officers responded professionally&#13;<br \/>\nand within the law.<\/p>\n<p>Kanja further called&#13;<br \/>\non senior officers to support police training institutions as they&#13;<br \/>\nprepare recruits and officers for upcoming pass-out parades.<\/p>\n<p>He said training&#13;<br \/>\nremained critical in preparing officers to meet the changing demands&#13;<br \/>\nof policing and uphold professionalism.<\/p>\n<p>Kanja spoke on&#13;<br \/>\nWednesday during a sensitisation forum on the New Service Standing&#13;<br \/>\nOrders and Police Reforms at the National Police Leadership Academy&#13;<br \/>\n(NPLA) in Ngong, where he challenged commanders to strengthen&#13;<br \/>\nleadership, discipline and accountability throughout the service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Inspector General Douglas Kanja at the NPL Academy on August 12, 2026\/NPS Inspector General of&#13;
